Hi, just an update, I managed to quiet my NEC 3540 down with the help of Nero DriveSpeed software which was mentioned earlier in this thread by meglamaniac. Thanks for reminding me of it, it´s a great piece of software. Both cd and dvd playback are quiet now, none of that highspeed revving up of cd´...

Well, for a second opinion (and a rather thorough review) on the NEC ND-3540A have a look here: CD Freaks review of ND-3450A . I have that drive and thusfar have had no problem reading any discs, be it CD´s or DVD´s. Initialization of inserted dics can be a bit slow but I think that has more to do w...

I have a black SATA version of that Supermicro backplane. I replaced the original monster-of-a-fan with a 92mm Zalman, works ok but isn´t really quiet, still somewhat wooshy and the drives are not decoupled so seek noises are audible. Keeps the drives at acceptable temperatures though. I like it, it...

Well, yeah, we really are very much on our own when it comes to Tagan. I had my battle against the windmills last spring when the 380W Tagan PSU I bought made this little irritating buzzing/rustling noise from day one (Later I found out that it was one of the PCB surfacemounted components that was c...

Wellwellwell, thread hijacking all the way... Sorry about this but I had to reply to GB Joe´s post. As it happens I bought that case for my workstation just a couple of months ago. The design is really open airflow wise and well, if there is something inside that makes noise then you can hear it. I...

Well well, seems that Tagan isn´t overly keen on answering anyones emails... I emailed their tech support twice over the period of two weeks, polite and informative posts where I outlined the problem (ticking and buzzing), when it took place (12V rail getting hammered doing dual instances of Prime95...

I have to ask Kizmo for the numbers (Don´t know him personally but he frequents the same finnish HW forum that I do...). So far he hasn´t given any numbers so I don´t know if he can acquire them. I don´t know if P2´s have an internal temp sensor so one could check the temp from BIOS. But if and when...

Passive cooling: Zalman ZM80C + Slot 1 400MHz P2
Pretty neat, the article is in finnish but you should get the point from the pictures. I think it would work with a faster Slot 1 processor also. He (Kizmo) says that the heatsinks get barely warm when running at stock speed. When overclocked to 533Mhz (4.0*133@2.6V) it gets somewhat warmer, no need...

Well, I would like to say my bit about the Lite-On drives, when playing media files (DVD, .avi files from CD etc.) the drive is very quiet, almost inaudible in my case (I have the LTC-48161H Combo drive). Hi, I´m thinking of buing a ATC-710 (Grey). I thought of doing a few modifications to it and I would like to know if the lower part of the bezel (the one with the filter) is easy to take off? Is it screwed on or does it have hinges like the door? I was planning on installing a 4 x 5´25" drive cage (...

I would suggest sending it back ASAP. I have a Barracuda 7200.7 (ATA100/80Gb/2Mb) and although it is just a little bit noisier than the Barracuda IV (ATA100/60Gb/2Mb) it replaced it is in my opinion a really quiet drive. Well, about the fan, they said in the review that: ..The fan is fixed on the FHS but if needed, it can be removed together with the clip. ... Hi, just ran into this PCworld article about a new kind of storage device: http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,108816,tk,dn011603X,00.asp Basically it seems to be a crossover between a HDD and a floppy...
