The open-source drivers will work just fine if you don't care about 3D.

i think the best "bang for the buck" cards <$90 are the radeon 8500le/9100's. although they are not passively cooled, how hard is it to unplug the fan and rig an undervolted fan to blow at it? Hmm. Not too hard I guess. Might be a little tougher to rip out that ATI processor and replace it with an ...

Just installed a 400W Seasonic Super Silencer PSU. Unfortunately, it doesn't move enough air to cool the case, so I had to plug the 120mm case fan back in @ 8V. But even with that fan plugged in the system is a lot quieter, at least as long as I don't run Folding@Home.

let us know how it works out. :) It seems to work pretty well so far. The picture was nice and crisp at 1024x768 (the maximum resolution for the monitor used on the machine that this card was for). Haven't heard any complaints about it at all. Next time I go over there I'll have to install Quake 3 ...

You might have also had a run-in with a bit of an electrostatic charge too....in which case, you fried your ram. Computer components (including RAM) are electrostatically sensitive, so if you had a charge and/or weren't grounded, it's possible that you fried your RAM. And I don't think licking it i...

1. Impeccable 2D display quality. I don't This depends on how you define impeccable, but I have tried every single generation of nVidia cards and their sharpness in 1600x1200@85 Hz using the best CRTs available is not good. That is, it's worse than Matrox or ATI Radeons. Then again, ATI Radeon has ...

I didn't mean to say that TV input was required. It's just that if there were two fanless nvidia cards that were equal on requirements 1-3, one of them was cheaper, and the other had TV input, I'd get the one with TV input (within reason, of course). So low price is a lower priority than TV input, a...

I'd add Fortron FSP350-60PN to the list too. You seem to have lots of hot components there, and Fortron is an excellent choice for situations as this, as it really moves air compared to Nexus/Seasonic/Zalman (place PSU with 80 mm fan here). Seasonic has the Super Tornado, which has 120 mm fan also....

Once you have narrowed that down, If it is the CPU fans (Panaflo's), then you can replace them easy. If it is the PSU or 120mm top of case fan, it is a little harder, but still achievable. Actually, the 120mm top of case fan is very easy to replace. Should I replace it with a Papst, undervolt it, o...
