OMG I wish I'd read your post yesterday - I've just RMA'd a board after a bios update s...

I have a DLink DNL-323 and it's a nice piece of kit. Very compact and quiet. It's housing 2x 500GB SAMSUNG HD501LJ. Just make sure you upgrade the bios to the latest version before you format the drives.

Thanks :) When the top is open (see the middle pics) you can see the red on/hibernate buttton along with two vent holes. The one nearest the front (on the left) has a silenx fan drawing air in. The has a very measurable, and needed, effect - the wooden box is very good at keeping heat in :) It has e...

Terrabyte Fileserver Project - silent fun with old kit.

Hi, I've just started a new project to build a file server. The requirement is for a low cost 24/7 fileserver to sit on my home network and act as a media store and general backup server. About a terrabyte of RAW storage should do, with the option to configure as RAID 1/0/10. The storage bit : 250GB...

I have a Sonata. First stupid thing to do was buy a mobo with a noisy northbridge fan. Doh! I took off the dodgy grill and replaced the NB fan with a papst I had spare. Nice improvement. The Crucial 9800Pro was shut up with a VGA cooler although you will have to move or remove the switch on the back...

I have an A64, Gigabyte k8t800 mobo, sonata case and use the stock HSF. I've been tempted to get a better HSF set up, zalman or otherwise but decided against it. The Athlon 64 cool & quiet feature clocks the CPU down to 800Mhz (and reduces the voltage?) when CPU load is light. In effect anytime I'm ...

I have a vga silencer on a 9800Pro, not overclocked, and it appears to run fine, although the new heatsink is just too hot to touch when the fan is in 'slow' mode, but I guess this is around 60 - 70c which, again, I guess is fine.

Antec Sonata & Dust

Hi folks, I've had a Sonata running for a few weeks now, about 5 hours/day and I'm getting some interesting dust features building up. The removable dust filter gets does collect a small amount of dust (the holes are very big in this ?!) The manual indicates that there are two pieces to the dust fil...

OK well not as good at zero RPM as first thought :) At Idle (800Mhz) and zero CPU FAN speed, CPU temp slowly rise over 30 minutes to settle around 48 C although I;m sure that If i left it a few hours I might be in trouble. Gigabyte - damn fools. Smartfan Shmartfan.

So I made one mistake, buying a mobo with an active northbridge cooling. The second mistake was to believe Gigabyte actually told the truth about the capabilities of their hardware. More Athlon 64 findings: After much messing around with Easytune and smart fan I gave up and tried speedfan. What a great utility! At idle, with the CPU fan OFF, CPU temp is stable at 32C. This is because cool 'n quiet clocks the CPU down to 800Mhz. 2. If the RPM is too low the noise is more noticab...

Samsung Spinpoint UK - good price from pcworld!

Spotted what I think is a good price ...

77 quid including vat and free delivery gets you a

Samsung 160GB Spinpoint 7200 (SP-1604N) Only has 2MB cache but thats cheap for a 160Gig

I guess it's worth keeping an eye on pcworlds website for bargains - especially with free shipping.
