unRAID
It's worth taking a look at unRaid , which offers these features: - Storage = N drives + 1 parity - Drives can be of different sizes (subject to parity drive being at least equal in size to the biggest drive) - If one drive fails, you can rebuild - If two drives fail, data on the other drives is sti...

Water-cooled Dual Core Pentium PC from NEC
NEC (now owners of Packard-Bell?) have this on their Singapore website . The blurb states "NEC's water-cooled PC represents the next generation of revolutionary PCs that incorporates advanced water-cooling technology from Japan." It has a Pentium D 830 inside, and claims the noise level is under 30 ...

Unfortunately because of a change in personal circumstances (nothing serious or bad), my folding efforts will be severely curtailed for the forseeable future. It's been a fun ride, and while I never overtook unregistered (how I wish I'd thought of that name!), I did at least just beat WoodsBoy's cav...

Thanks, sgtpokey. I'm more in waiting mode than looking mode at the moment, as we wait to hear when we will move. But from my recent research Dell and Compaq in Asia don't seem to offer Celeron M's and Gateway just doesn't operate in Asia any more. I suspect that part of the problem is that the CPU ...

Why folding? It seems that is a lot cash worth of hardware, electricity, and time. Whats the point? No offense meant, I'm just curious. Nate, no offence taken. My viewpoint is I have this powerful CPU sitting around not doing anything most of the time. If it can do something useful, why not? Yes, t...

If you're running Win XP, you might want to try SpeedSwitchXP. I have no personal experience of it, but it's mentioned in one of the posts by Pate in this thread. Coincidentally, he's also in Finland.

My goal is to break into the top 100... Other than that I can't see breaking the top 25 or 50. Having finally made it to the top 100 myself recently, you'll find that it's unfortunately (for the team) not all that difficult. The number of active folders seems to be declining, and in the past couple...

I think one key aspect to CPU power needs is the number of PCs you have. If you have only(!) one, then it has to handle everything right up to video encoding and those latest games. If you're fortunate enough to be able to get more than one, then it can make sense to match the CPU power to specific ...

Sounds like I should take another look at the Mini-ITX's, but then what about the Shuttle Zen? I think it would be easier to assemble although it's a bit bigger, and a 2.5" drive might remove some of the concerns in the review. Is it possible to suspend/hibernate a non-laptop? Regarding the Scythe, ...

How would one abort a WU and then turn it in? Actually I don't really want to know the specifics, but was more wondering if there was some hiccough in my system which might have led to this. I don't believe I ever intentionally aborted a WU, much less submitted it, so it's a mystery, albeit a minor ...

Dirge, I've looked at the VIA systems and mini-itx but costwise it becomes quite expensive once you add in an LCD monitor, DC-DC converter and other parts. The cases aren't very cheap, either - and I don't have a spare humidor/toaster/Commodore lying around! I've also heard that leaving laptops on 2...

Thanks for the comments. I'm surprised there aren't more models which are aimed at this sort of requirement. We're really talking about only an e-mail and browsing appliance, maybe a bit of letter writing and some spreadsheets. A Centrino sounds like the best bet, but I feel like I'm paying for more...

Quiet low-end notebook?
My wife currently use an old Dell PII 266MHz for e-mailing and browsing, but for space reasons I'd like to get a laptop to do this. It might end up in the bedroom, so it has to be quiet - I expect we'll leave it on 24x7 - don't want to boot up just to check e-mail. And it will share a broadband conn...

6 point WU?
I just noticed on the EOC stats that one of my (few) machines uploaded a WU which was worth only 6 points! Are there such work units? Or is there a penalty for late WUs (I thought there were just no points given)? I suspect it might be from a PC I had to switch off for a week.

Ive used DTemp, MBM and SpeedFan and all give the same temp reading. I'm not too familiar with MBM, but DTemp and SpeedFan both read the SMART data from the HDD, so it's not surprising they would show the same thing. I do believe that SMART readings are more consistent; my concern is more around te...

My Seagates always seem to run hotter than my old IBM Deskstar or WD drives. Typical temp is 49C or 50C, with no air conditioning running - ambient is around 30C. On the other hand, they do seem to survive. These temps are from reading the SMART data. Slightly OT: I do wonder about how temps get mea...

Re: Which Athlon for a low heat iDEQ 200N ?
what CPU should I get for an iDEQ 200N, that can both run HL2 and be underclocked to produce low heat/noise? Doesn't look like anyone has addressed the graphics issue. I have a 200N, and I could NEVER get it to run Halo using the onboard graphics without the game crashing within seconds. (From othe...

After all, EOC seems to be increasing their lead over us day-by-day now (they are now outproducing us by over 1,500 PPD) Somewhere else someone had a theory about how many folding machines would go offline once the summer holidays (in North America) came around and all those students went home. I w...

Tried again with transferring another "stuck" WU to the uploading PC. Uploaded it at 7:01 UCT and when I checked on the Stanford userstats an additional WU AND points were credited by 7:15. Here's the situation: on checking with Stanford stats, I saw that I had 2 WUs and 44 points credited after the uplo...

David, thanks for that. One more problem (of course!): I uploaded a unit transferred from the folding PC to the uploading PC, but unfortunately the FAH client on the uploading PC chose that time to upload a unit as well. Now I should be able to check whether I have been credited with the work units,...
