Have you considered a very very slow running fan blowing over the drive(s). An 80mm fan running at <500rpm will keep a drive quite close to the ambient temp, and so long as the fan is good quality it will be utterly silent, you can even suspend the fan using gardent string and foam if there isnt a ...

Which hard drives will stay cool enough?
We live in southern Virginia (USA), and most of our house isn't air-conditioned, so it gets very warm in the summer. Our computers are fairly quiet, but this seems to be rough on the hard drives. We have old Seagate Barracuda IV drives; the SMART reports are starting to look rough, and I'm worried b...

Whoa. Anyone else recall the Compucase LX-6A19?
Yes, the front intake doesn't look so good, and I don't like doors, but I'm still tempted.

Did these turn out to be any good? I tried another 92mm fan with dismal results, so I'm still looking.Edward Ng wrote:I have the four samples, but as I said, I don't have an actual Nexus 92mm to compare against.
I'll play around with these fans tonight.

I picked up five of those fans, along with a couple of other things, after seeing this thread. Unfortunately, they have a pretty unpleasant buzz at 12V that nearly turns into a tick at 5V. Without that they would be quite nice. If anything changes after I leave one running over-night, I'll let y'all...

Re: Evercool EC8015m12CA.....Slim 80mm fan.
Here's a 15mm thick 80mm fan by Evercool. Unlike the other slim models I've seen, this one has rpm monitoring. Maybe somebody here has heard one.....these slim fans come in handy in many applications. Link I have not one but three of these due to show up tomorrow. Somewhere around here I read about...

Like jmatucd, I have been so busy that I neglected to report on the success of my TekGems order. I still haven't even unpacked all the fans! However, I can say that the service was quite good. 'uATX' is really micro-ATX (the u looks a bit like the micro symbol). mATX is another short form for micro-ATX. So they are the same thing. Ah, thanks for making that connection. Buy this system, pulling out the MB, and replacing it with another sounds unnecessarily expensive. As it happens — I did...

Re: Asus Vintage S
Assuming it has standard m-ATX standoff locations, couldn't you just pull out the included SiS board and replace it with the m-ATX board of your choice? *EDIT* - Upon further research, apparently you can use whatever m-ATX board you want. Taken from this Asus page : Vintage series adopts the standa...

Forgot to mention-- the top heatsink is barely warm to the touch, while the heatpipes are SCALDING hot and the bottom heatsink is quite warm. Do heatpipes lose efficiency over time or something? BTW, looks like what is sold in the US as the Chenming "Game' barebones. Yes - well spotted. Looks like there is also a S462 version available too (nForce 2, though). Would be great with an XP-M, if it supports it. Northbridge looks passive. I am now getting a little tempted but can't seem to find ...

Re: front fan
Looking at the pics on newegg , it doesn't look like there is a front fan mount. I agree with you, but that's the IW-Z720T.I300FU2AD , which has a 92mm rear fan and lacks a hard drive cage. The IW-C720T.I300FU2AD has the 120mm rear fan and a hard drive cage. I haven't spotted other differences — wa...

i suggest buying the orange 120mm yate loons. we know that they actually work when coming from isellsurplus and geeks.com, so it'd be good if we know that their supply is the same. i'd suggest buying a lot of 10, in order to see what the difference between each fan is - not to mention the fact that...

TekGems has 'em
There's another source for the orange 120mm: TekGems . The price for one to nine fans is $10.99 each, but buy ten or more and the price is $3.90 each! TekGems also has a 120mm with LEDs for the same price — I guess it's the same as the one previously mentioned. Then there are four black fans labeled...

I've recently looked inside two old Gateway PII-based systems. One has a PII-233 with a noisy (at least now) 40mm fan on the heatsink, but the other has a PII-350 with a large fanless heatsink. If I recall correctly, both systems have a power supply with a bottom 92mm fan (not hard-mounted!) under a...
