To steer this back to my own purposes, do any of y'all have temperature measurements from before and after switching from a normal hard drive to a GreenPower or 2.5" drive? System readings (from the motherboard rather than the drive) might be especially interesting.

Have you considered a very very slow running fan blowing over the drive(s). An 80mm fan running at <500rpm will keep a drive quite close to the ambient temp, and so long as the fan is good quality it will be utterly silent, you can even suspend the fan using gardent string and foam if there isnt a ...

Which hard drives will stay cool enough?

We live in southern Virginia (USA), and most of our house isn't air-conditioned, so it gets very warm in the summer. Our computers are fairly quiet, but this seems to be rough on the hard drives. We have old Seagate Barracuda IV drives; the SMART reports are starting to look rough, and I'm worried b...

Yes, the front intake doesn't look so good, and I don't like doors, but I'm still tempted.

I picked up five of those fans, along with a couple of other things, after seeing this thread. Unfortunately, they have a pretty unpleasant buzz at 12V that nearly turns into a tick at 5V. Without that they would be quite nice. If anything changes after I leave one running over-night, I'll let y'all...

Here's a 15mm thick 80mm fan by Evercool. Unlike the other slim models I've seen, this one has rpm monitoring. Maybe somebody here has heard one.....these slim fans come in handy in many applications. Link I have not one but three of these due to show up tomorrow. Somewhere around here I read about...

If only ASUS cases were available in North America, separate from barebone systems, you might have some responses. I quite like the look myself: I nearly bought an ASUS Vintage S the other day merely to get the case!

It looks better than I recalled, actually, but whether it's quiet depends on who you ask, and, I'm certain, what goes in it. Either way, it seems easier to make a larger case work well if you don't really want or need the small size.

'uATX' is really micro-ATX (the u looks a bit like the micro symbol). mATX is another short form for micro-ATX. So they are the same thing. Ah, thanks for making that connection. Buy this system, pulling out the MB, and replacing it with another sounds unnecessarily expensive. As it happens — I did...

Assuming it has standard m-ATX standoff locations, couldn't you just pull out the included SiS board and replace it with the m-ATX board of your choice? *EDIT* - Upon further research, apparently you can use whatever m-ATX board you want. Taken from this Asus page : Vintage series adopts the standa...

There's another source for the orange 120mm: TekGems . The price for one to nine fans is $10.99 each, but buy ten or more and the price is $3.90 each! TekGems also has a 120mm with LEDs for the same price — I guess it's the same as the one previously mentioned. Then there are four black fans labeled...
