The Inspiron 6000, btw, is most assuredly not even a remotely quiet computer. *sigh* I'd have expected a lot more from a Pentium M system. But these Dothan CPUs have a max heat dissipation of 27W (I know, it'll rarely get there, but still it's not exactly the same as the first Pentium Ms), and we're...

Inspiron 6000, Linux or Can one SpeedStep further down?

I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 6000 (Sonoma, Pentium M 740 (1.73Ghz), Mobility Radeon X300 + other stuff that doesn't make that much heat as the aforementioned). The Sonoma platform is pretty new, so I haven't gotten everything working under Linux yet, but I suppose we'll get there. Most annoying...

Also, putting some heavy books on an (aluminum) case might reduce the vibration significantly. Can anyone think of any other good ways to let people try out a bit of quiet? You know, I'd recommend people (if they asked) to try out having the computer in a second room for a day and set up the monito...

Re: Why you need silent system?

I kinda dont understand why do people here want silent systems, why preformance is not matter to your you only want it to be as silent as possible? I myself have fan with 6000 RPM on CPU and its noise level is 55 DB and its fine you will stop notice it in couple of days using it. If you intend to w...

What's a good, silent graphics card for Linux?

...it's most assuredly not Matrox P650, whose support for Linux is utter and total shite. Which is a shame, cos it's passively cooled and it has ultra-crisp images + dual screen support. Which is what I need, but for Linux. A quick look around suggests that nVidia is (vastly) superior on Linux to AT...

Hmm. Well, I experienced the weirdest problem, as it was. The comp was working perfectly allright for a while, but at the moment I've been working on getting my home network working with internet connection sharing, and so I put it in the 'office room' in front of the TV there. And worked fine at 1....

I restored the clock just a little after posting that. Still running fine at 1.25v - you sort of have to wonder what the point of the 1.65v core voltage default really is.

Almost there

Alright, about half a year has gone since I started looking at getting a new computer, and picking up hardware and stuff to put in it. The final(?) specs: Evercase 4252 (or some such number - I always get it wrong) with blue trim Aopen AK-79-1394 2x256MB PC3200 GEiL RAM "Golden Dragon" Barton 2500 M...

Righty right. Ordering a 460W Super Silencer. According to Kool'N'Quiet it's the only one the European distributor is offering. One has to wonder at whether Seasonic personell do drugs in marketing planning meetings. 'Wow, this is real good ganja... Let's, hehehehihihihi, let's _not_ sell most of ou...

Money, Sweat, Blood and Tears: My (very) silent pc

I've run into a bit of a problem with my silent PC. It's not the first, as it happens; I've managed to kill a CPU, and order the wrong type of RAM (though the incompatibility was hardly overdocumented - in fact, only barely mentioned in the mobo manual). Anyway, it works now - for a while. My PC kee...

I also can't wait to get hold of one of these super silencers however no luck in the UK as yet. Is there any US store that will ship to Europe? Thanks Jaime Lillicomputers.com were willing to send to Norway for $60, which is as much as the PSU itself, but I guess it can't be helped. Though... Does ...

I would kill to get one of these babies to Norway. :? It is really bugging me. Mailed their Amsterdam office earlier today, but I guess I won't get a response untill Monday. It's a bit annoying really, a lot of the stuff reviewed on SilentPCReview seems to be quite difficult to get hold of in Europe.

My point was that EMI must not be that big an issue, since so many PSU's now have 92 or 120mm gaping holes in the bottoms of them, aimed right at the motherboard. Mmhm, I would imagine it might depend on what you want to do with your PC to start with, i.e. what kind of interference you are willing ...
