No Zalman case for me
The Zalman case is not what I am looking for. Mainly because it is way to bulky. It if would be a prebuild case I would go for something like the Tranquil PC (mini-ITX 1GHz fanless more or less same idea as Zalmans case). I'm not going for top of the line power, but I do love the idea of dead-silenc...

Passive CPU cooling
I am looking for any info on how much heat dissipation CPU heatsinks can do without any forced airflow. Both figures in free air and figures in cases without forced flow are interesting. Especially interesting are CPU coolers that is likely to have good performance. E.g. heatsinks with heatpipes lik...

Questions
I know very little about detail on how fans work, so this might be a few stupid questions and possibly wrong assumptions. From what I read in this thread it seems that you need about a full rotation on most fans to get 2 sequential tach pulses (this is what we need to figure out the RPM). Assuming a...

Lookup tables vs formulas
It is always nice to hear some more ideas, So I really walcome Phooeys idea with lookup tables. There is however a few things we don't take into account here. The most important for the end result is that we have not added stability to the sysstem. Se http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/network/synd/200...

Fan comparison
Have a look at http://www.cpemma.co.uk/ The first graph is very interesting. Each manufaturer seems to keep a rather linear noise vs flow ratio. Note that values are from manufaturers figures. From what I have read it seems that Papst nowadays have less quality in production, so noise varys a bit fr...

Fan controlling algorithm
Fan controller algorithm Sorry that I missed that you started this thread before posting my input, so this is more or less a re-post. Temp sensors should not be fixed to a specific fan. If that is all we get we are real close to using normal temp controlled fans and skip the fancontroller compleatel...

Fan controller algorithm
Fan controller algorithm Temp sensors should not be fixed to a specific fan. If that is all we get we are real close to using normal temp controlled fans and skip the fancontroller compleately. The point with a smart fan controller is that you can do other smart tricks, e.g. increase chassi fans whe...

Lots of minor details
1. Software control vs completely self contained. The point with my suggestion was to get optimal performance with the least amount of cabels. You would still have a compleately safe system even without software, and depending on how many sensors you attach you may be able to reach near optimal perf...

Software issues
If things does turn out the way I hope there will in 99% of the cases be a real software running on the PC providing some information and to display all the details you ever wanted and some more. This software should as mentioned before be written in a OS independend language (e.g. TCL, Java etc). Y...

Internal vs external mounting and cables
I believe there is a fundamental difference between doing internal or external mounting of a fan contoller. If monted externally I would probably prefere to have it in a 5.25 bay. I would also want to have a display and a few buttons to interface directly with the device and I would love to have an ...
