The heatpipe coolers that use one fat heatpipe in the middle does basicly this. They may either let the headpipe go all the way down to the chip or they make have a thin part of the bas in between. I guess this depends on what works best in manufacturing. I use the DP-102 cooler that works like this...

If the fan is not changed it will not do any good to have an additional wire there. If the fan supports it the 3:d wire is used to send pulses to indicate the fan rotation speed. With a 2 wire fan you might need to cut off a small peice of plastic on the connector to make the connector physically fi...

That's a nice and simple circuit you got. But unless you want to go below 5V for the fan you might as well buy a zalman fanmate. Cost around $5. The fanmate uses a voltage regulator, but what you have is almost the same but buildt from discrete components. I suggest that you either secure the box ve...

The probe is probably slow at reacting and dissipates very little heat in itself. That makes the contact point between the probe and the heatsink much less sensitive to good contact, so you can do fairly accurate measurment without thermal paste there. 65C on the heatsink is really hot. Dell are kno...

The distance does matter a little like Bluefront mentioned, but it does not affect it a lot. What matters more is if the duct has bends, if the inside of the duct is smooth, how well the ducts seals in both ends and also if vibrations in the duct itself will enhance the vibration noise from the fan.

Greef, why do you want to run CPU fanless? Have you removed all other fans in the system already? The CPU is usually the hottest component in the system, so it needs a fan more than other components. Since the CPU is located in the middle of the machine, it is the easiest noise to reduce before it e...

It depends on what CPU you have if it locked or not. Older AMD CPU's are unlocked. AMD XP mobile CPU's are unlocked. Many other AMD CPU's can be modded to become unlocked. If you don't have this option you just have to change the FSB, and that means that you will slow down everything related to the ...

The major problem with this heatsink is that it is made to fit 2*60mm fans, and there are no really good 60mm fans. (Read a lot more about 60mm fans in the fan section). So, you would be in for quite a lot of modding to get really good performance and silence out of this heatsink at the same time. I...

Small fluctuations in voltage are acceptable (but not really good). What does worry me a little bit is that some of the values you posted are way out of spec. +5V : 3.20V +12V : 7.36V -12V : -6.11V -5V : -5.91V If these values would really be true nothing would work. The machine would not post, hard...

Thats a PIII socket (370), right? It is missing one lug on each side of the CPU socket compared to socket A, and the capacitors on both sides of the socket is awfully close, and you don't have any holes around the socket to mount any through-hole CPU cooler. What CPU do you plan to run on that board...

I agree with Sthayashi that earplug of hot glue is the common ways to fix this problem. Just how hot does the coil get? A good estimate is how many seconds you can hold your finger to the coil. Trodas managed to make the 1200MHz VIA C3 run with convection cooling only, but he did do some work. There is a good thread here at SPCR about that build.
