my experience with 6TB Red Plus vs old 3TB Red

My venerable OG 3TB Red EFRX from 2012 (CMR back then, be careful that these are now called Red Plus if you want the CMR version, the regular Red is now SMR) started throwing SMART errors in the last few weeks. Some sort of sector issue, and files actually started disappearing... yikes. This is my d...

Re: Wanting to Upgrade Nuc

TranquiPC got back to me and said that I wouldn't really be able to upgrade to anything with the case. wahwah. It can handle other 15W NUCs thermally, but the I/O ports (front and back) likely changed a bit over time, so I'm guessing that is why it won't work with different NUCs. But there are othe...

Re: Wanting to Upgrade Nuc

Maybe... there is a chance that the mounting side dimensions changed slightly. IIRC, the heatsink on those covers the cpu and some vrms (and/or a northbridge?). If the vertical dimensions of your old and new board are the same, it'll be fine, but they could have done some odd things and changed them...

Re: what does a system needs to run 3 browser with 8 tab each

If that's all you are doing, 4GB RAM is fine. My laptop (4GB RAM) easily runs many browsers and tabs fine, including streaming from at least one while doing this. A dual core cpu is fine too. My desktop with quad core and 16GB RAM is nicer, for sure, but only because I push it more (video encoding e...

best silent hard drives in 2020?

Just curious what everyone is buying for silent drives these days. The industry seems to have slowed down a lot as the tech has leveled out and SSDs have ramped up, but many of us still need mass storage and want it to be quiet. This is definitely major area that I miss official SPCR reviews for...

So it cant be fixed ? how hot does it get while browsing? this is disheartening, i dont want the fan to become noise browsing the internet, thats nuts I have not seen this reported elsewhere, and I've read many reviews. It could be an issue with his particular setup? It's certainly not universal......

Re: the impossible quest of finding a dead quiet, low-power

I have the SF450 platinum and a low power system (see signature)... I've never heard the fan turn on, even in the summer with 95F ambients. I just don't pull enough power to trigger it. I think they claim the fan turns on based on wattage, not temperature, but am not sure. In any case, I've never pu...

No Kodi is generally fine, I haven't seen any stutter or framerate dips. On the other hand I don't have any 4k vp9 videos that I play on kodi, most of it is still x264. This video seems to stutter really bad, and its only 1080p @ 24 so there must be something else going on https://www.youtube.com/w...

Could you post some links to video examples? I've never had an issue with my 2400g (integrated Vega 11), which is often compared to the 1030 in performance, so I'm curious if I see the same issues on the same videos.

Could you just rig a new fan on the 1050ti, or did the card die?

Re: Silent 4TB+ HDD at idle

I never liked suspending drives, personally. What I have done for many years is put the bare drive on two .5" thick strips of sorbothane, one running along each side on the bottom. The sorbothane then rests on a layer of foam, at least .5" thick. The sorbo absorbs vibes and raises the drive off the ...

It shouldn't be hard to quietly cool this 65W CPU. If he's using PBO, it's no longer a 65 W CPU... but still, you're right, it shouldn't be that much worse. OP, that heatsink and CPU should work well. Things to try: - Tweak fan profile curve... sounds like you thought of that, but this can make a h...

I have a similar unit... never had an issue with spin-up, but did have an issue with sustained operations (like cloning a 3TB drive to another 3TB drive). I've decoupled my hard drive in my case the same way for many many years: it's screwed to a tray and that tray rests on some .5" thick sorbothane pads, which then rests on a layer foam, all resting on the bottom of my case. They tray allows airflow over the top and bottom, which is really the only r...

Just a late update. I ended up buying a PWM A12x25 for my bottom intake (InWin A1, which has a dust filter), and an S12 as the rear exhaust (no filter). It's working well. I then decided I wasn't happy with the NH-L12s and switched to a NH-U12s, which has much better performance, but its fan (F12, I...

Noctua has supported AM4 socket for quite a while now. Though not all models have support by default, some need an add-on kit (free from Noctua, last I checked). But check compatibility, most now have it in the box. The massive D15 may or may not fit... check a site like pcpartpicker, you can probab...

Anyone else having flashbacks of the Zalman chipset heatsinks? Especially the blue one, where you'd have to "comb" it over sometimes to fit in a graphics card. Good times...

And 11W really doesn't seem like much. Surprised all the OEMs so far are doing fans instead of a Zalman-like heatsink.

Are WD Red 6TB as quiet as 3TB?

I've seen several people here comment that Reds larger than 6TB are not quiet, but I'm not sure I've seen many comparisons of 3TB and 6TB. Ideally I'd want larger than 6, but I'd rather have the quietness... basically, if the 3 and 6 are basically the same, I'll get a 6. But if the 6 is noticeably l...

Thanks guys, do you recommend that A12x25 for use as intake/exhaust fans too? I see it's excellent on heatsinks / rads (higher pressure scenarios), but some say the S12x25 might be better as a case fan (good for more airflow at lower pressures). Re: Modest Video Card to keep me quiet?

There are some passive GT 1030 models out there, and even some passive GTX 1050ti (Kalit Palmx, IIRC). If you're feeling sporty, undervolting a GTX 1060 MSI Gaming X a bit can get its power consumption (and noise) very low. Even at stock it might be ok.
