Better HDD cooling by contact with case or open to air?

I want to cool my one of my hard drives but without using a fan.

(A) Is it better to have the smooth metal side of the HDD resting on the metal of the PC case.

OR

(B) Is it better to have the drive mounted (using the side screws) with air above and below it. The airflow is minimal.

Samsung 500 GB (HD501LJ) and utilitities

Hi everyone I have a Samsung 500 GB hard drive for SATA (model HD501LJ). I seem to recall someone here saying that one (or more) of Samsung's hard drive utilities did not work with the Samsung 500 GB hard drive. Can anybody remember which ones? Or where this posting is? Thank you for any info. -----...

Please compare Samsung 400GB HD401LJ with 500GB HD501LJ

Hello Many people here in SPCR seem to like the 500Gb Samsung HD501LJ (16MB SATA) Before that many people here liked the 400GB Samsung HD401LJ (16MB SATA). And of course the recommended list likes the Western Digital WD5000KS but I am not interested in it. One big difference between the two Samsungs...

I want to ask about seek noise. I am going to surmise that had I not soft-mounted my HDD that the seek noise of the Samsung without AAM would be really, really annoying but since it's soft mounted, I can't think of a reason why I'd rather have the WD. Seek noise will be important to me as I don't th...

Need advice on choosing a Maxtor (not Samsung or Seagate)

I use only parallel IDE. For hard drives I use some Samsungs and also some Barracudas: Samsung SP1604N (160 GB, 2MB) Seagate ST3120023A (120GB Barracuda V, not 7200.7, 2MB) Seagate ST360021A (60GB Barracuda IV, 2MB) I can not easily get a decent price on the 160 GB Samsung with 8MB (SP1614N) and any...

Combine measurements taken from too close, with equipment that's imprecise, and you get a gobblety-gook of miseading information. They were better off when they just subjectively ranked the drives. I think you are dead right. Subjective measurements woul dhave been better than StoreageReview's over...

StorageReview's strange results with Barracudas & Samsun

Hi guys, maybe I have been out of circulation for too long but recently I came across a review of the Samsungs at StorageReview done earlier this year. See http://www.storagereview.com/articles/200401/20040112SP1614N_1.html Go have a look. They tested a Samsung 160GB IDE drive (SP1614N) against a Ba...

Samsungs: NIDEC better than JVC but what about FDB?

Hi guys I have been away and I see lots of detailed posts of personal experiences with Samsung drives. From what I gather, the NIDEC motors ae quiter than the JVC motors. Bit someone posted about FDB too. I thought all Samsung 160 GB drives (PATA, SATA, 2MB, 8MB) used FBD. Q.1 Do some 160 GB Samsung...

My PSU fan is getting a bit too noisy. I had thought that maybe I just took out my old 80mm PSU and replaced it with another 80mm fan. The BTX announcements last years said they were going to push it hard by mid-year 2004. It all seems a bit quiet at the moment and few people seem to be talking about BTX. You could do a better job, probably cheaper as well, with just a zener diode in the fan wiring. http://www.cpemma.co.uk/graphics/zener2.gif A 4V7 1.3W zener will drop the fan voltage to (12 - 4.7) = 7.3V, or you could go to 6.9V with a 5V1 zener. A 5V1, 1.3W, zener can carry 250mA, equivalent to ar...

Yes I get that on the "Readings" tab. If I adjust them downwards (say to 65%) then nothing happens. The fan rpm values at the...

However FanSpeed's web site says it is only tested on three mobos so I guess I can't tell in that case.

I have seen pictures and they show a big fan on the northbridge chip. Can I remove this fan completely and just have a heatsink there instead?

I think the Asus A78NX has the same chip (if it exactly the same) and that uses only a heatsink.
