I have the 80GB pata version of the 7200.7 and they have always made a "buzzing" noise after about 30-60 seconds of idle. This is by design by Seagate, as they want the heads to continually move after a period of "idle", so as to "prolong the life of the drive" This is a well-known characteristic of...

I also have a quiet Samsung SP1614N PATA drive that replaced my recently acquired buzzing Seagate 7200.7 80GB drive and I am extremely happy with it. Although it is not as fast as my previous Maxtor DM or whiney WD drives it certainly has decent transfer rates and it defaults to DMA 6 ULTRA DMA 133 ...

I just installed the Samsung SP1614N PATA along side my Seagate 7200.7 80GB drive and I must say that the Samsung is quieter (no buzz like in Seagate) and the transfer rate is faster. You can actually set the transfer rate to UDMA 6 133 ata. I made a compromise on the acoustic management setting (wh...

I have the Seagate 80 GB 7200.7 PATA (1st drive buzzing sound—2nd replacement drive buzzing sound) with firmware 3.06 and I am very disappointed with the “buzzing” noise as mentioned in other posts. The drive is quiet when it does not buzz every couple of minutes. I use a work around to solve the bu...

Yes BarCodeBlack, the Seagate engineer "suggested" I might try the smscan program, but he wasn't sure if it would work and he said that Seagate did not support it. It did not work on my 7200.7 drive. It is about time for Seagate to find a solution to this problem, or they should stop endorsing the "...

Installed a 7000A-ALCU on a P4 1.8 Northwood

I just installed a Zalman 7000A-ALCU on a GIGA 8IEXP mobo with a P4 1.8 Northwood and the only problem I had was that one side of the fan bracket was too close to a capacitator by 1/64”. To be on the safe side I used a Dremel and cut off part of the ear as recommended by Zalman. I used Arctic Silver...

Opinions of my Replacement Seagate 80GB 7200.7 pata drive.

I received my replacement Seagate 80GB 7200.7 PATA drive yesterday and installed it as slave drive. After “initializing” the drive through WIN XP Pro disk management, I used PM7 to partition and format the drive. The drive already arrives with a low level format so this is just a quick format. I set...

I just spoke with Seagate tech support.

My 80 GB 7200.7 has the exact same buzzing symptoms from the hard disk. When it is idle, there is an electro-mechanical "buzz" and a low sound "clicking" that can start at any time and last for 30 to 90 seconds. If the drive is accessed during this time, the buzz will immediately stop. I currently h...
