Another question is how a passively cooled graphics card is gonna line up with the case physically.
I am sort of hoping that next-gen dual-core working on a smaller process will be cooler. Given intels recent trent that may be overly optimistic

I hope your motherboard is undervoltable because a Prescott and Zalman 7000 won't be a quiet combination if you want to maintain clock speed. An XP-120 would really help you but isn't feasible for an HTPC. With those components the best advice I can give is make sure you can extract the processor h...

That was the response that I expected. In fact, I tried very hard to go the AMD route. But the availability of mATX s939 boards along with known performance problems in ffdshow for AMD was simply to big. Please not that I am aware that AMD produce very good processors in terms of performance, and es...

Intel vs AMD is a moot point, IMO, if you like a slim look and care about looks. The slim cases restrict airflow too much to be accomodating to Intel chips. Venice cores also support SSE3, which help narrow the gap in video processing. I was trying to find a source on this, but to no luck. I have r...

HTPC-centric questions
It seems that many people here are building HTPC/media-center pcs. For system-discussions, what is the proper sub-forum? "Quiet Prebuilt, SFF & Barebones Systems"? Perhaps the word HTPC should be included in the title then? Some of the "problems" facing HTPC people are common to silent pc review peo...

disappointing. I was expecting a local "disk controller" that would appear as a disk in windows, but use the full PCI-x bandwidth. As there are PCI/PCI-X disk controllers out there, there should be no theoretical reason why one could not build one with performance many times that of serial ATA as lo...

Isolating PSU from case, or PSU fan from PSU?
I have a quiet, sleek pc tower built using silent components that is working very well. However, the large, slow 120mm PSU fan is generating some very low frequency vibration that seems to resonante with the steel cabinet. I am considering isolating the PSU, as it is fastened by only 4 screws in the...

AMD s939 mATX mobos out there?
What is the current situation on mATX mobos for the amd platform currently? LAst time I investigated it was only a couple of boards, mostly using the ATI chipset. Now we are getting somewhere :-) This means that the mobo currently should be able to "perfectly" balance load/temperature/noise for every component except PSU. My experience is that is won`t. And I bet the functionality to do so would cost next to nothing. The motherboard/PSU connection is somethin...

If we make an energy budget, by how much would internal mobo losses contribute? If air flow out of the case is good, and can be accomplished without excessive noise/cost, then benefits of lower mobo losses should be primarily lower power consumtion. That would be the case I guess for typical PSUs wi...

We essentially want to remove direct sound radiation and indirect vibration from our hard-drives. At the same time we want to enable heat conduction so that the drive does not over-heat. Removing direct, airborne sound involves a physical barrier that sufficiently enclose the drive that has sound-in...

Is it possible to lower the voltage even more than that possible with the fan controller supplied? Tapping either 5V or inserting an additional resistor? At what voltage does the fan cease to reliable start?

My computer seems to be getting where I want it, however the main nopise source now is a low-pitched (like 50Hz) mmmmmmm-sound from the powersupply. It seems that this resonates with the case and produce a very audible sound.
Any idea on decoupling powersupply to case?

any fans with speed-control input?
I`ve read that fans contain circuitry and are built to operate at certain voltages and speeds. We are trying to circumvent this by lowering the voltage and/or using pwm that may interfer with the circuitry. The elegant solution would be to have more advanved fans with separate "speed" inputs and con...
