Even after building an air duct to the Super Silencer-400 from front of PC, the fan was the loudest noise source in the PC. (Dual P-III 1Ghz - 2x92mm L1A@5V, 80mm L1A@6v for quad-video card/circulation, 92mm L1A@5v exhaust, 60Gb Cuda V HD). I replaced the SuperRed PSU fan with an 80mm M1A and it run...

Interesting article. You have a good eye, to catch the PSU exhaust foam channel reference buried in the Power-Snooze discussion.

Paul, for the remaining noise, three possibilites come to mind: 1) replace fan in PSU with quieter. This will void the warranty so for me at least, this would be a last resort. 2) add a PSU muffler, earlier in this thread I posted a link to a commercial one that could be easily made at home 3) add ...

Thanks for the pictures, Lilla. It's very interesting to see your work. As for the noise barrier, I can think of two alternatives : 1) Two noise blocks, one extending 5/8 of the way down from the top, another extending 5/8 of the way up from the bottom. 2) Something similar to BlueFront's LanBoy fan...

Good topic Lilla. For the channel, I used a sheet of black "Foam Board" purchased from Staples for Cdn$7. It's like "thick" bristol board with foam inside. It's used for storyboarding. A single sheet is more than enough to make ducts for 2 PC's. It cuts easily with a utility knife. My duct has 4 pie...

Did any of you notice a dramatic reduction of noise after replacing the PSU fan? For me, the most dramatic noise reduction came after ducting cool air directly from the front of the PC. This kept RPMs low. But the PSU fan was still the loudest source of sound. After replacing the Superred for an 80...

No, actually I had somehow missed that article. Thanks. From the article I would say that the Samsung would be best for my needs (cooler than the others), but alas it is not available around here, and neither is the Barracuda. That leaves me with the Hitachi, which is also rather rare, but shows up...

Trip, replacing the fan is as easy as that but if you want it done right you´ll need to solder the wires. You may just twist the wires together and tape them up but it´s sloppy. Probably no soldering required. On my SS-400, I found that the fan was connected to a removable 2-pin "socket" that pulle...

After installing the SS-400 in an otherwise quiet system, I found sound levels from the PSU noticeable. I decided to see what I could do to improve things. I took a two-step approach to resolving the problem. Both have been discussed in many places at SPCR. 1) Duct cool air from the front drive bay ...
