Re: Can you read upside down?

Thank you to the poll respondents. I realized afterwards that the poll would be of limited usefulness because I decided against using a tedious list where every possible combination of ability, handedness, and normal reading status would have its own line. Still, you can analyze it for some insights.

Can you read upside down?

Haven't been here for quite some time, but I stop by to ask a question that seems to beg for an answer today. I more or less assumed that everybody could read upside down, until one day, about thirty years ago, a housemate expressed surprise at my ability to do so. Shortly thereafter I read a novel ...

Re: Why are there no good HDD silencer in 2018?

Unless I'm mistaken, HDDs are still the medium of choice for data centers, so that's a part of the equation. Also, most people buy pre-assembled computers, and the computer makers seem to think that the typical user wants to have lots of storage. Does that storage actually get used or is it just a m...

Re: Is SPCR Dead?

Compared to the early 2000's normal computer components have become much quieter. We no longer have 7200rpm disks running on bearings made from gravel. CPU's don't run at full speed all of the time and aren't cooled by little blocks of extruded aluminium with a 60mm fan doing 6000rpm. Graphics card...

Re: Ability to speak on the internet

An Aside: The globalization (in the economic sense) of the web was inevitable. IMO, it follows the pattern for mass media established a hundred years ago when radio first began. Radio broadcasting in the US was initially begun by tube manufacturers to give kit radio hobbyists something to listen to...

I would say it depends on whether this is going to be your main pc or something you are putting together simply for fun. Mechanical parts, especially, seem too risky, and it might even be that the original owner relinquished it because of noise.

Yes, we have VoIP here, but I don't think it's anywhere near as popular as where you are. I had puzzled over your earlier statement for a few minutes before commenting. Perhaps I should have expressed it as a question: "What do you mean?" More information would have prevented it.

If the Republicans nominate anyone other than Trump or Cruz they'll be able to beat Hillary, so the Democrats had better use the superdelegates to nominate Bernie, who can defeat anyone.

Re: Is it possible to estimate a computers dBA level?

True, but I was wondering how much the overall noise level would be reasonably expected to vary from one vantage point to the next. I guess it may vary wildly: if you consider the SPCR GTX 960 review, Lawrence Lee managed to run the whole system at 14dB under load (slightly above the GTX 670 idle l...

Re: Loudness etc: Tempest in a Teapot

When you listen to recorded music at a volume that's lower (or higher) than that of the actual performance there's a kind of "cognitive dissonance" present. Partly it's because you have a notion of what the actual loudness was, but it's also because the acoustic waveform of musical instruments is di...

Everybody yearns for freedom, right? But there are two kinds of freedom. Being U.S. centric, I’ll call them Republican freedom and Democrat freedom. Republican (or Libertarian) freedoms include the freedom to drive your car as fast as you want even though it threatens everyone’s life and safety; the...
