...any speed advantage the Raptor has over a recent fast 7200k [sic] drive comes mainly as a result of its ultra-fast seek times, and there's some debate about whether a non-rigid suspension might compromise this. No argument, if you're saying seeks on a suspended Raptor are matched by any recent r...

Samsung responded by email with "Call 1-800-SAMSUNG", so I did. That's not a normal mounting condition. I'm not going to speculate. Officially you're supposed to mount the drive horizontally or vertically. BTW, both phone conversation (Samsung & Maxtor) quotes are verbatim or really close. So here's...

I contacted a few manufacturers with this question: What is the official company stance on mounting any 3.5" hard drive (SCSI or IDE) at an angle? Assume all other guidelines are followed in mounting (4 screws, etc). For instance, does [COMPANY] allow for a hard drive to be mounted at a 45 degree an...

Any harddrive made in at least the last 5 years can be mounted at any angle.
Whoops.Do not mount the drive in a tilted position.

Re: Questions about dual xeons
Should I just replace the fans with some panaflos? The stock windtunnel / heatsink is actually pretty efficient. The cheapest quick mod you can do is replace the 60 mm fans with quieter ones. What would be a safe max load temp? P4 xeons slow down at a certain temp (70c?) and shut down at a higher t...

Just cut a 4x4x0.5 inch Sorbothane square into 1x4x0.5 inch strips. The razor idea was a dud - the first strip took forever and the cut is jagged. Then I used common household scissors and got nice clean cuts every time! Bottom line: use sharp scissors. Oh, and I did freeze the square for an hour f...

I've heard it's a real bad idea for health reasons so I'd recommend against it. I don't understand the temperature insulation arguments though. number one - if you want to know, test. Exactly. Benchmarks beat speculation any day of the week, but we'd need to have like 50 hard drives mounted in cages, 50 by bungee cords and let them undergo typical user access patterns for workstations for 5 years and then note the survivors. We could speed...

I also don't follow your logic Maxamus. A human eye would not be able to detect the difference in motion that is sufficient to cause errors in hard drive seeks. Further, the ratio of a human's mass and acceleration (F=ma) to the earth are not close to an actuator's relation to a hard drive. From the...
