Or put your computer in "Stand By." At least that's how I tested to see how much noise was coming from my HDD.The best way to get an idea of the hard drive sound is to turn your computer on w/ the drives unplugged.

Just put my Samsung on foam
And it's amazing how quiet the drive is now. Case vibration is close to zilch. The door doesn't vibrate anymore. Seeks are much, much fainter. The way I differentiated what noise was caused by the hard drive was by putting the system in Standby, and seeing what noises go away. Now I can barely tell ...

Has anyone had a similar experience? Yes. We recently got a USB2 scanner, Canon 3200F I believe. Plugging in the USB made CPU temps rise. 5C or better, I'd guess. Even though I wasn't scanning, and it isn't one of the scanners that's powered through USB. I don't run CPUIdle. Just running MBM5 and T...

Well I got Ghost 2003, and everything cloned fine. Only hiccups were: - Ghost told me I had to defragment before running. Since my C: was low on space, windows defrag wasn't able to defrag enough until I got rid of my Restore Points. After that, windows defrag worked, and Ghost was able to proceed. ...

Very nice. Thanks for the explanation. If you'll permit me one last question: Does that also mean the partition sizes are cloned exactly? My C: is 20GB, and nearly full. D: has lots of space. And there's about 8GB of free space on the end of the drive that used to have Linux on it. Were I manually p...

Thanks for the info. So this would be Ghost 2003 and above? (Well, looked like the next version wasn't out yet on Symantec's site.) So I would put in Samsung as slave, partition/format it, use Ghost to clone the WD to the Samsung. Take out the WD (or set to slave), and set the Samsung as Master. So ...

drive clone & swap (XP/NTFS)
Got my SP1614N today (NIDEC FDB by request from excaliberpc), along with an external 3.5" USB2 enclosure. My current WD is 2 NTFS partitions, C: with Windows & Programs, D: with My Documents (all my data). Gonna replace my WD w/ the Samsung, and put the WD in the enclosure for backup/etc. I was thin...

Ah, well that's good to know. :) I was just wondering, since so many people's case temps never seem to break 30 or so. But I'm about stable as anything at current settings, so I guess I don't have anything to worry about. The HDD is, surprisingly, the most temperature sensitive part of the machine. ...

40C case temp
Are mid-30s to 40C case temps going to hurt any of my components? Are these temps abnormally high? When I'm on my PC in the evenings lately: - Idle: CPU mid-40s, Case 36-37C - Load (well, right after exiting FFXI): CPU 50-52C, Case 40C My room temp is about 77F/25C currently. My specs should be in m...

Intel debuts low-power Pentium Ms
http://news.com.com/Intel+debuts+low-power+Pentium+Ms/2100-1006_3-5276873.html?tag=nefd.pop Apologies if this has already been posted, but I hadn't seen anything on these new lower powered Dothans yet. Although the new processors don't run as fast as other Dothans--the Pentium M 755 runs at 2GHz, f...

I got the same noise with a new Gateway machine at work, Maxtor hard drive. Mouse movement, especially when resizing a window, and scrolling seemed to do it. Didn't matter if the speakers were on or off, so figured it wasn't the sound card / speakers. I searched around some forums, Google, and usene...

This was just the thread I was looking for. :o I'd just replaced the 92-mm fan in my PIII 800 Dell w/ a nice quiet Zalman, and was considering replacing the noisy hard drive (WD200BB I believe) with a 40 or 60 GB Seagate. Maybe use it as a Linux system. But I was going to ask if it's good for a new ...

I replaced the stock Antec fan with the same Enermax adjustable 120mm. (Have two of them now, but only using one at present.) With case fan grills still in place, and the fans not undervolted (yet turned all the way down using the Enermax dial), they are still rather loud. Even just running one in o...

Enermax Adjustable 120 & 80; Zalman Multi Connector
Working with my system some today. Got that Zalman northbridge heatsink finally installed. Reinstalled the CPU, HS, Fan. Realized that, even though those grills are adding to noise (still haven't cut em out), the Enermax 120s I've got are still rather noisy by themselves. So apparently I need to get...

My LCD
This Fall I purchased a Benq FP767 17" LCD (the black version), and I'm quite pleased with it. It has a 16ms response time, 260 brightness, 500:1 contrast. Native resolution 1280x1024, max refresh @ 75 Hz. Priced under $400. (I don't see the exact same model being sold anymore, but I assume they hav...
