Regarding the Diagnostics noise, please see this thread: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=23810&highlight= It's a really bloody annoying 'feature' of seagates hard drives, and the reason I will not be buying or recommending them to anyone. Who ever implemented this with no way to tur...

nice review, as always.

do these new seagate still exhibit the god-awful self diagnostic noises, as I mentioned a while ago in this thread:

I'm in no hurry to buy seagates if that is the case.

Perhaps SPCR could modify their 'recommended' list to at least warn of this problem?

Well thanks for your input guys, now I know what the noise is. Haven't found a way to stop it though - DTemp (nice little app) can switch the scanning on or off on my PATA 'cuda system drive but not the SATA data drive. I am currently working on some audio sound effects (it's my job) and to have thi...

What the *!"* are my Barracuda SATAs doing?

My 160 gig Barracuda SATA drive has this REALLY irritating habit of seeming to go through a continuous defragging or drive indexing process. This despite the fact that I am not defragging and drive indexing is turned off. The sound is not chunking of a drive accessing various different areas of the ...

I have a freezer 64 in a 3000b, and had to take the tube out as it hit the cooler. But as the poster above says, it's so easy to take out the tube - 4 screws and you're done.

Another Freezer 64 CPU D.O.A

I know I'm not the only one to have one of these broken straight from the box. Just thought I would 'report in' which might help others in choosing their heatsink. The fan hub seemed a bit loose, and the was very reluctent to turn with the prod of a finger. Plugging it into a spare fan header on my ...

For the fan to be effective sucking, you have to flip it 180 so that the shape of the fins works as intended. Seeing as this is impossible with the 7000's frameless fan, you'll just have to leave it blowing. With the design of the Zalman, this is probably for the best.

Well, in trying to find some more info, I stumbled across what seems to be the french version of sprc: http://www.pcsilencieux.com/ One of the comments of the disktwin was that once placed in the 5.25" bay, the drive is in a hotter part of the case, so heatsink effectiveness might be offset I suppos...

they just mount on the sides of the drive and don't connect with the top or bottom Yeah I guess, but then when installed in 'traditional' fashion, the only bit of the drive touching the case is the sides. Hopefully the DiskTwin is at least as effective, since the whole issue of heat buildup seems t...

My Z 7000AlCu (chew) was buzzing, but I fixed it like this

Had the 7000AlCu on my A64 3000 for maybe 10 months now, and today I started hearing this little buzzing intermittent noise from my PC. Now we all know that intermittent noise is extremely irritating, so I whipped off the cover from my tower and stuck my head next to all of the potential noise sourc...

Well looking at this product again, I might spring for some at somepoint. Price wise they're similar to buying decent case fans I suppose. No doubt the Vibration isn't remove althogether, but hopefully it is vastly improved. I would probably try putting these on the drive and then suspending via ela...

I think you are probably right in your estimation. My own decoupling method uses cable-ties through the cage and drive screw holes. It would, I imagine also be in the good/better region. Cheap and cheerful, if a little messy. I have some concerns about HD heat though. The advantages are that the dri...

Nexus Harddrive noise reduction

Just browsing the Nexus site and read up on their new "DiskTwin" harddisk heatsink/damper.

http://www.nexustek.nl/disktwin.htm

Looks a little too 'solid' but given Nexus' record, I guess it will do a fairly good job.

(Sorry if this is old news - did a search any didn't find it mentioned.)

Thanks people. I've also been recommened to get down to College and Spadina as there are a few shops around there. Fingers crossed and all... Anoying that it's such a hard part to find (and yet so cheap as to make the effort worth it). The guy in Radio Shack was convinced I needed and ethernet cable...

Toronto PC parts outlets?

I know we've just had a thread on 2.5 > 3.5 IDE adaptors, but my situation is slightly different. I am on holiday in Toronto and need to find a store that has these in stock. I've so far visited about 8 different shops without success. Don't really want to pay $70 for an external 2.5 USB drive box, ...

OT - just to say thanks

message from a silentpcreview newbie:
I've just put together my new A64 based PC, and would like to say a big 'thankyou' to this site, MikeC and everyone in general for helping me to decide which quiet components to buy - a Zalman 7000A-Alcu and a Nexus NX3000 PSU.

This place is a fantastic. :)
