Re: Voting in America just got a bit harder

I believe the line " a more perfect union " is actually in reference to the Articles of Confederation , which was the first governing document of the United States. The Constitution replaced it. I find our Constitution both unfair and poorly constructed compared to more modern documents. At the time...

Re: Are SSDs really that bad?

Of course they are perfectly silent and super fast but you can't get anywhere without seeing someone commenting on their high-failure rate, defragmentation issues, firmware data loss etc.etc. Is this really the case, is it still untested technology? Because I would rather prefer reliability over si...

Re: Properly functional illuminated keyboard?

(disclaimer: I work for Logitech, but not on any product related to keyboards/mice) So I have the K800 , which is the "wireless" version of the Logitech illuminated keyboard linked above, and I love it. The weird thing about it is you can really use it wired or wireless--it charges via a supplied US...

Yes, but that's sort of obvious and not the point I was making: filemon is a misleading way to understand how much read/write activity windows does. The vast majority of that is totally cached and won't go anywhere near the disk. That said, I'd be on the SSD bandwagon today if I had a few hundred bu...

Transform 'Cuda 7200.11 1.5tb into Velociraptor Killer TechWare Labs posted a mod article by Artiom that transforms a $120 Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB into a speed demon that outperforms a $230 VelociRaptor 300GB in almost every way. The mod only requires the use of Seagate's own Sea Tools util...

Obama Is Not Black Umm, no. You are wrong. He is black. Obama gets to be black because A) that's the ethnic and cultural heritage he identifies with, and B) what is he supposed to call himself? White? Black? Should he preface every description of his ethnicity with a disclaimer that he is the produ...

Hi all, I'm building a firewall and a server. The firewall will boot from a CF disk. The server will boot from a pair of Western Digital RE2-GPs (RAID 1). Which motherboard/cpu/power supply should I use? I am running these out of my house and would like to keep power consumption low. I'm not sure i...

Lately I've been noticing monitors with 1680x1050 resolution being marketed as "1080p", even though it's smaller than 1920x1080 all around. I could understand 1366x768 being marketed as "720p", since it's more larger than 1280x720...but this 1080p thing is simply deceptive. When did this start? Grr...

Re: 100Mbit Fiber - WD Caviar GP enough? Or is F1 better?

There are two issues. The first is whether or not you can sequentially read/write 100 mb/sec, which any modern hard drive should be able to handle. 100 mb/sec is 12.5 MB/second, and realistically you'll only get a fraction of that. Any recent drive should have no problem meeting that speed. I think ...
