Re: 12TB WD Red Plus

Are there any resources out there on modding NASs for lower noise? I took my cue from this YT video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-aTvVo59tY&t=181s There are fan mod videos on there too. As long as you get the voltage correct you can't really go wrong with that. Putting an XL mouse mat under i...

Re: 12TB WD Red Plus

It's finally time for me to upgrade a couple of drives in my NAS. I've hung on with 6TBs as long as I can. I'm thinking of shucking either 12TBs or 14TBs, not sure which would be better acoustically? Certainly the report of the 14TB above is encouraging. My 4 bay Synology is modded with Noctua fans ...

Re: HTPC/Emulation Station - A Rejigged Rig

I'm going to re-use the Antec case in a different set-up. So If I can find a cheap AM4 board (tricky for itx) I'd pair it with an 35w Athlon 200GE and use the NH-L9a-AM4 there. Pick up the L12 as suggested for the new machine. The Antec's previous build was an integrated J3710 from ASRock. That's no...

Re: HTPC/Emulation Station - A Rejigged Rig

With 130mm case clearance for the cooler, I would have gone with something beefier than the L9...like the L12, if you want Noctua. Much more overhead for silent cooling. I'd originally bought it for use in the Antec case. It's sitting on MB as I 'speak'. Worth trading up even for a small overclock?

HTPC/Emulation Station - A Rejigged Rig

For sometime I’d wanted to upgrade my HTPC setup so it could also handle all emulators + other light gaming (racing/sports). I was unaware, until some research, that my old Antec 300-65, which had gone through two builds, had a beefier power board than expected. Since it was apparently 135w, I thoug...

Re: With helium drives, anything above 6TB = noisy?

I'm running 20x WD 8tb drives, not really reds but whites, shuck them from Mybook, IIRC these are equivalent to reds, to me they are not noisy drives, not quiet as WD Greens were, no where near the noise of a Black, to me they are acceptable specially considering there there aren't much options and...

Re: With helium drives, anything above 6TB = noisy?

Nearly a year on. . . has anything improved?

I could just about live with noisier drives for semi-cold storage but not for day to day use. Especially if the majority of the noise is caused by vibration like my first foray into 8TB was.

May be forced to go the NAS route and load up on the 6TB Reds.

Re: With helium drives, anything above 6TB = noisy?

I have a WD80EFAX (8TB "Red" helium 5400rpm) pulled from an external. The idle noise is unpleasant (high pitched whine), but not loud. Installed in my PC case, it's fine. Seeks are a loud, dull "thud". In addition, the drive does something in the background, which means you will hear seek noises ev...

Re: With helium drives, anything above 6TB = noisy?

Thanks for that. Yeah I should have said 3x in a 4 bay. No RAID requirement as nearly everything is both already drive and cloud backed up. Went for Asustor as I don't need anything fancy, pricing is keen and people seem pretty happy with them. Plumped for the WD80EFZX mainly because I could get a d...

With helium drives, anything above 6TB = noisy?

Despite using WD Reds for basic storage for years I'd never put together a NAS setup. With 2018 nearly upon us I thought I'd get round to it. So with the Asustor enclosure on the way, I received a WD Red 8TB (WD80EFZX) today. Switching on my test enclosure first thing I noticed was, in comparison to...

Re: Lian Li EX-503, Changing the stock fan, recommendation?

Found it quite quickly :) The only place it could go inside the unit is the floor, that would mean it's inaccessible if there's a drive in the bottom bay but with 4 or less drives it's perfectly workable.

Re: Lian Li EX-503, Changing the stock fan, recommendation?

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I would lean towards the Noctua ATM.

I might have a spare Zalman Fan Mate 2 knocking about, if there is a way of tucking it away inside at the front of the unit I might try that initially after fully setting the unit up.

Lian Li EX-503, Changing the stock fan, recommendation?

Picked up this 5-bay RAID/JBOD enclosure in the last week, it comes with the Lian Li stock fan LI121425BE-4-A. While it's not loud, it's not exactly quiet either, pretty much slap bang in the middle, but not unpleasant. However I'd prefer something a notch lower, perhaps with a LNA. So since it look...

Stuck pixel found this evening, http://imgur.com/jUDTHH6 so that equals an instant return back to Amazon.

Now considering the Iiyama Prolite XB2483HSU with its AMVA+ panel. No idea whether Iiyamas are generally buzz free, any reports?

New Dell U2414H: Quiet as a mouse but. . .

There's a degree of backlight bleed above and beyond any IPS glow and I'm very much in two minds about it. I initially took photos in darkened room during daytime at 25% brightness 65% contrast (the settings I found comfortable for my eyes in normal lighting) with sRGB, then at 38%/75%. As the diffe...

Re: Dell Ultrasharp Monitors. . . Buzzing?

Just to say I bought a Viewsonic VP2365-LED. Partly because of their zero dead pixel policy and the degree of height adjustment. There's no discernible noise at any brightness level. Nice monitor, impressive picture, perhaps just a touch of uneven brightness, I reckon that can be pretty much nullifi...

Re: Mini-ITX Beast Planned with Antec ISK 110

Sounds promising. I've yet to check how the stock sounds in the environment where the PC will be used. However I think it's pretty likely I'll invest in Noctua. I tried to do a cable tidy this afternoon/evening and noticed when removing the cable for the front usb header that there was a little too ...

Re: Mini-ITX Beast Planned with Antec ISK 110

Although the Noctua NH-L9i isn't recommended for Ivy Bridge @ 77W unless there's good ventilation and turbo's disabled I think I can get away with it on this now undervolted rig. Furthermore I reckon the 14mm NF-A9x14 fan could be replaced with the 25mm NF-B9 PWM and it would just squeeze in since t...

Re: Mini-ITX Beast Planned with Antec ISK 110

I'm not an expert, but I don't think you should worry. The maximum safe operating temperature is 105°C and you are far below that. Reading through some (overclocking) forums people talk about maximum temperatures for 24/7 usage ranging from below 75°C to below 90°C. With 79°C I think you are fine, ...

Re: Mini-ITX Beast Planned with Antec ISK 110

I see two possible issues: The system might not boot, because the integrated PSU doesn't provide enough energy. The converter board might burn out when stressing the CPU during normal usage and taking more power from the converter board as it is specified for. (80W) In the first case, yes, please g...

Most of my parts are here now just monitor, OS and CPU to get. My build is taking shape with most of the components ordered. The processor choice is still up in the air. Dell U2412M here as well. Silent at any brightness setting. I'm curious, why U2312HM? You do know that 1920x1200 is the shit, right? Years of using 16:9 means I'm not particularly concerned. Thanks for the advice. @CA_Steve - I've had a good read around the web and it's interesting to see how some have issues and others none at all. The I7-3770K has the same TDP as the i5-3470K used in the forum thread I referenced. So perhaps Asus Z77 board pulls a lot more than the H61 Gigabyte? Dunno...
