While obviously incompatable with many of the revenue generating advertising opportunities available to sites like SPCR, it's the profiling potential of ad serving companies that I don't like. The many ads that SPCR has on their own servers don't concern me, are relevant, and I have even used them f...

Re: Help choose SSDs for SPCR's test systems
You'll want to pay close attention to random write speed. I have an inexpensive Transcend 8GB IDE SSD rated at ~20MB sequential read and ~10MB sequential write. Day to day use running apps and booting and shutting down all mimic the 5400 RPM drive performance you ask. I can even clone ~2GB from and ...

Flandry: HD Tach gives it ~20 MB/s sequential read and ~10 MB/s sequential write - ~the same as rated. You might be right about the chipsets, but random writes are a good suspect too. I'll do some Googling and see what I can come up with on the chipsets. I ran Gigabyte's iRAMs on Intel 865 and 875 d...

It's apparently running in DMA 4. The chipset is Intel 915GM, but I have also had the same drive on an Intel 855GM. I don't really task the drive that much, at least that I'm aware. It really seems to only happen just after log-on for those 10 or 15 seconds. But I suppose if I tasked the drive elswh...

I use a Transcend 8GB SSD in my notebook. I've used it with both Windows 2000 and Windows XP and there is a short delay after every user log-in. It lasts about 10 or 15 seconds and starts after the desktop is fully loaded. The drive activity light remains solidly lit and everything requiring disk ac...

Or do you see a special merit of the EEE PC over them for file server duty? Only in that for what I need it is all in one and low power. A couple GB of space would be enough. Plus the power consumption should be low enough that their is no practical need for it to sleep, just set it to shut off the...

Thanks for the info. Do you happen to have a Kill-O-Watt meter to measure its power draw? Idle, screen on, then off, then with CPUBurn with the screen on or off. I'm looking to setup a 24/7 ftp server. I don't require any CPU power or a big screen. Just some basic human interface capabilities. A ver...

I can report pretty much the same as aaa. Not only do all 4 I measured read 0 watts plugged in, but off, they also all read 0 when asleep (not hibernating). Laptops seem very efficient sleepers too. They are obviously consuming some power when asleep, but the Kill-O-Watt meter I use is only accurate...

That's 3 watts for a 2.5 inch drive. The 1.8" drives are generally even less. I suppose there is a difference in heat and if the laptop was right on its thermal cusp where a fan turns on and off, then switching to SSD might make a difference in fan operation. But I suspect that more often than not i...

It might have something to do with random writes. Even the high performance flash based SSD's seem to do very poorly. The high performance models are supposed to be quite the upgrade over an HDD. When I installed on mine it was definately slow, but no where near the hours mentioned in the user revie...

The answer is an amount great enough such that it will strongly discourage her and others who would do like her to not do it. The amount Ms Thomas received seems to fit that bill well, but in comparison to the recording industry's cost to bring and defend the suit is probably too small. It matters n...

RMClock works very well with the Pentium M as well. I like it over NHC only because I don't use .net, and .net is a lot to install for one little program. I can vouch for the D400 as very quiet. I stuffed in an inexpensive SSD, disabled SpeedStep so it's always running at 600MHz, and bingo, no movin...

English is my first language, but that doesn't help me much. :D I think, though, the context of the entire statement would imply a simularity between the two. A manner in which they are identical, but not identical in every, or even more than one respect. And I went on, in the last sentence, to iden...

So, klankymen, (again with the names that makes this so hard to take seriously :D ) no we wont be charged with theft when we peer-to-peer copyrighted material. We won't be charged with such because it doesn't fit the legal description of theft. But! The jury is going to see us as the thieves we are....

And yet, they are still easily recognizable as the thieves they are - stealing what it owned by someone else so they don't have to pay for it. And, redistributing so others might do the same. No different than how any of us would see someone who sneaks onto a pleasure cruise so they don't have to pa...

Makes it easy doesn't it? It also explains the popularity of peer-to-peer in face of what "poor innocent moms" wouldn't otherwise do. When someone takes what is owned by someone else without their permission it is theft. Copyright affords just that - ownership.nick705 wrote:coke-snorting RIAA executives

It likely has something to do with "power factor." I don't really understand the principle other than I know it produces results like you're seeing, and that the electric meter on the outside of our houses are designed to correct it such that we are billed for what we are really using. A Kill-O-Watt...
