This is very interesting. It actually explains something I've noticed personally- When I start concentrating/focusing on a continous noise in my house (say, the sound of the AC going through the vents) and actually tune-in to the individual parts (for example, listening for a wa wa wa component "ins...

Yes, my old drive was a WD Raptor in the Silent Drive enclosure. However, I own 4 other 7200 RPM drives that I've swapped in at times and they were still only marginally more quiet. The Raptor's are surprisingly quiet. It's tested at 42.5dB on Storagereview.com For performance - It's pretty much fas...

Don't walk, run to your nearest store and buy a SSD now.
(This might be obvious to some, but I just had to post) All I can say is WOW. I'd done it all pretty much all- fanless/passive PSU, passive vid card, only a really slow moving fan on the massive coppuer cpu heatsink, no other fans. My HD was in a silent drive 2002c enclosure, thought my system was p...

Almost Brand New Antec Phantom 500 PSU (PRICE DROP: $75)
Almost brand new Phantom 500, just recieved from Antec directly as a replacment for my failed Phantom 350. I installed it and used it in my HTPC for about 5-6 hours. I'm now going to build a new HTPC with a 120W PSU and a micro-style case and mobo so I don't need this behemoth. Still on Warrenty for...

Just some info: Acer AL2616W 26" LCD is silent if you turn brightness up to 100% (Contrast can be set to whatever) and then tweak the brightnesss to the desired level in the Windows Control Panel. Also, the Samsung 27" LCD (model 275T) is NOT silent, it makes a slight buzz regardless of settings. It...

Just a followup- I decided to look up the specs on Western Digital's site and things got even more confusing. According to WD the 150Gb version is supposed to have seeks that are 10db louder (46 .vs. 36db!) than the 74gb. It's more like the opposite from what I'm hearing. I don't know, I can only as...

The new Western Digital 150Gb 10k RPM Raptor (WOW!!)
I just replaced my old FLA01 version 74Gb 10k WD Raptor with a brand new 150Gb 10k WD1500 Raptor. These things just came out a couple of weeks ago, see www.storagereview.com for a comparison review. All I can say is WOW. Seeks are a LOT quieter. Storage review's performance database says less than 1...

For CRT's, it's worth trying to up the refresh frequency by 1HZ or so. That is, my Viewsonic P815 whines at 85hz but not at 84 or 86hz. I read somewhere that it's a PSU component in the monitor that "wears in" at a certain freq (coil whine/hum?) after a number of years use and that changing the reso...

Two things: 1) I just bought a Sapphire 9700 pro ultimate edition for $200 inc. shipping to CANADA. So, the price of the card was about $180+shipping. This is on Ebay. 2) I decided to go with a 9700 not only because of the excellent deal I got, but also because the 9800 runs a LOT hotter. So hot the...

Wow, only 8.4W for R&W with the new Raptors? Has anyone tried putting one in a SilentDrive Enclosure (from www.quietpc.com)? I've had no problems running the Seagate Barracuda's in them and the Barracuda's are supposed to disapate 10-12W or so at R&W.
