Re: Macho 120, Rev A has no backplate! Is this safe?

Cool, I think using the right backplate would be nice. I guess how it works is they have one of their retailers list the part and then I purchase it? That is what they offered me, which I'm waiting for them to send me the link. In the meantime I'm using this other backplate, so no warping. I verifie...

Re: Macho 120, Rev A has no backplate! Is this safe?

I took another try at what to do, after looking at the warping a second time. I decided, without a backplate, I would not use the heatsink. Period. Ok, so I got this kit, which doesn't work with the included kit of screws that are mounted to it. So I pried off the little black tabs that hold the scr...

Re: Macho 120, Rev A has no backplate! Is this safe?

id say if its not riding in a car/bike/bus/train, youd be fine. the mobo has its own socket backplate that stiffens the core area much more than older boards ever were. Ok, so the backplate referenced above does not do anything for a heatsink, sadly, because the heatsink pulls AWAY from the backpla...

Re: Best CPU cooler that does not block first pci slot?

I installed the Macho 120 tonight, and it gives ample clearance for the first pci slot on my motherboard. Beware though, that the fan mounting pins do stick out way past the edge of the heatsink, with a 120mm fan, using up a lot of the clearance the smaller heatsink gives. Unlike the Thermalright HR...

Re: Macho 120, Rev A has no backplate! Is this safe?

Ok, well the threads are different on the separate mounting kit. Can't use the backplate as is. I tried installing it with the screws and washers as provided with the heatsink, but as I was putting the back of the case back on I noticed the board is warped alarmingly, away from the backplate behind ...

Well, amazon got them back in stock today. I was reading newegg doesn't pack theirs very well, so I ordered from amazon with 2 day shipping so hopefully it wont be banged up by the time I get it.

Seagate Desktop 4TB, any input?

I've read around on these forums, and the Seagate Desktop ST4000DM000 4TB drive seems to be the recommended 4TB drive. Any input on these? Are 4TB drives slow compared with smaller drives? This seems the coolest running one, and cool means longevity I think. For price per TB, 4TB seems the best deal...

LG IPS Monitors chirp while sleeping.

What makes them chirp I don't know, but it is a high tone chirp that's almost out of the audible range. If you plan to buy one of these, be aware you may hear it if you are in the same room with it while it's sleeping. The chirp sound goes with the blink on the power button, when the light comes on ...

Re: Successfully silencing my 180mm with MSI Sys_Fan control

With the fans turned down my FirePro 2460's settled to around 50c at idle, with monitors attached. This rig runs 14 monitors, so graphics card cooling was paramount in my purchase decision to get the Silverstone FT02 case. Forgive the dust on the keyboard please in the picture below. I attached it t...

Re: Successfully silencing my 180mm with MSI Sys_Fan control

Macho 120 due to arrive tomorrow. It's 102mm deep vs 80mm, and 5 heatpipes instead of 4. So I'm looking forward to it. As a side note, I put the HR-22 on my AMD, and boy does it cool it. Fans just have to spin up a little to keep it at 45c under heavy load. I haven't tried a non-Thermalright CPU hea...

Woot, I found a way to silence the fans with the MSI motherboard. Little trick with using the bios to set the fan speeds.

Successfully silencing my 180mm with MSI Sys_Fan controls

Ok, so I couldn't silence these fans before, because MSI fan control for the SYS_FAN headers goes down to 50% and at that setting the Silverstone AP181 fans spin at around 870rpm, louder than just using the switch on the FT02 case to set them to 700rpm. MSI Command Center in Windows does not allow y...

Re: Best CPU cooler that does not block first pci slot?

Just as an update to this thread, I ordered the Macho 120, since it has 1cm clearance over the HR-22. Should leave enough room for a card in the first pci slot, while being 120mm deep so hopefully it will cool decently with a couple fans on it.

I ordered the mounting kit and the Macho 120 Rev. A from Nan's Gaming Gear. Best price I found, with f...

http://www.thermalright.com/html/products/accessories/vx_btk_2.html I emailed thermalright to see if it will work with the 120 Rev. A. Nice looking kit, if it does. Edit: Looking closely at the way the bottom part (where the mounting bracket goes over) I don't think it will, because the 120 has an ...

Re: Best CPU cooler that does not block first pci slot?

I found a review of the Macho 120, with some good pictures, with side by side pictures of it next to a HR-02. Looks like it's just narrower, not much shorter. Pictorial views of the measurements helps me see what it'll look like when it gets here. http://blog.daum.net/lovenabi_/472 Review isn't in e...

Re: Macho 120, Rev A has no backplate! Is this safe?

On closer inspection, they dropped the "backplate cap" as it's called, also, on revision A. No backplate, no cap I guess. Maybe the backplate was shorting things, and causing problems, so rather than redesign it they just removed it for a less safe setup.

After a bit of contemplation, it could fry the processor too, which I don't have a warranty on. Might be better to not chance it.

Re: Macho 120, Rev A has no backplate! Is this safe?

Wonder why they dropped the backplate, looks like a pretty massive cooler for no backplate whatsoever. Just little washers. But maybe it's enough... I'm tempted, as I like the looks of the Rev. A better, it's pretty! :D I also got the warranty from Micro Center on the motherboard, so if it cracks it...

Macho 120, Rev A has no backplate! Is this safe?

I looked at the manuals of the two coolers, and there is no backplate in revision A... instead it looks like it has a washer on the screw, which is to dissipate the pressure over a larger area I guess. Is this safe? I like the nickel plating, it looks nice. But a crack in my motherboard sounds nasty.

Re: Best CPU cooler that does not block first pci slot?

I think I'd rather play it safe and get a cooler that gives 10mm clearance. Just to be sure. I edited my post above when you posted, but I mentioned maybe I could consider the Macho 120 as it is 120mm wide, or something like it if there is a better one (I don't care about price) that is also that wi...

Re: Best CPU cooler that does not block first pci slot?

The Noctua has a big wire sticking out of the clip, not sure how far but that could make it hit unless it were wrapped in electrical tape or such. Maybe I could replace the fan clips with something else though. I heard the Megahalems fan clips fit Nactua NH-D14's.

Re: Best CPU cooler that does not block first pci slot?

Both the mugen n megahalems have 130mm, so crosscheck well what clearance you have, 150mm of the hr22 is cant be measured like that as its asymetrical, its 70 from the left to the center 80mm from center to the right = 150mm, the HR02 has 70mm toward both sides = 140mm, the Mugen 4 and Megahelams s...

Re: Best CPU cooler that does not block first pci slot?

I moved my edit, sorry I didn't wait :/

Umm, it'll almost fit 150mm, so I think 130mm should work, and 120mm definitely should. I think 1cm clearance should be enough... assuming it isn't a noctua with a nice big fan clip sticking out to fry stuff.

Wow, good clearences. I put a card in the slot, or at least I tried, and it had to slant sideways to even slide into the slot, while touching the heatsink (power up the system and I'd have had smoke). I considered moving the cooler sideways a bit in it's mount, but when I went to do that I noticed i...

Best CPU cooler that does not block first pci slot?

What cpu coolers are there that clearly do not block the first pci express slot, while also being good for silencing? It seems most of them are big, and are a close fit or worse with the first slot. What cooler will safely fit without being so close? The HR-22 blocks it, at 150mm wide. I'm going to ...
