If the subject of the patents are "old hat," then Apple should not be allowed to win the patent from the PTO.
Any thoughts on whether Apple is doing anything novel here, either in terms of actually getting theoretical designs to work or coming up with innovations?

Thanks for the suggestions :D I've read about GTA4 and it's content, and I'll definately have a serious word with his dad. I assume you are concerned about the violence in GTA4? This happens to be one of my research areas -- a lot depends on how mature your nephew is and the context in which he pla...

Using this with amp'ed computer speakers?
All you audiophiles in this thread -- Please don't make fun of this idea (too much)... I have an old Megaworks 550, which is already amped, so input for that needs to come in from pre-amped source. is that possible with this mobo? I know these are not super-high quality speakers, but I'm thinking on...

As BillyBuerger points out the prices of the "middle cards" have dropped a bit and today you can sort of get $150 performance at $100. Take a look at the HD4670. That's a card that performs really well (better than the 7600GS in its days) and draws less power than a 7600GS (at idle anyway). I'll be...

Re: GPU idle power up 10x since 2 years ago?
I think you're looking at it the wrong way. Yes, the 7600GS was the same price you can now get a HD4850... But that's not because their equal cards but because prices have dropped considerably that now you can get a higher end card for the same price you used to have to pay for a lower end card. Of...

Thanks!
Careless reading on my part! This is a 3x jump in idle, which to me is still baffling... with increased CPU/GPU efficiency over time, I don't get why idling is so hard to throttle down. Are there software / mobo solutions for constraining GPU idle power draw? Or is all that juice really needed, even...

GPU idle power up 10x since 2 years ago?
Two years ago I plugged a passively-cooled Gigabyte GV-N76G256D 7600GS (AGP8x) into my rig. According to reviews, it draws 13.7W on idle and 27.4W on load. ( Xtreview -- which may be an overestimate given that the fans draw some power too). Today, the same money buys a passively-cooled Gigabyte GV-R...

BSD on cold powerup
Using a power bar is the easiest way to reduce this waste. Even so, the power bar will draw a tiny amount of power unless you pull the plug off. I've been trying to do this, but WinXP will BSD out of hibernate. Not sure if this is due to my PSU, mobo, whatever -- but it's a consistent result. There...

I will say this about buying new things to reap energy savings: very few of the compact flourescent bulbs I have purchased have anything of the lifespan of the incandacents I used to use. Many of the compact flourescents burn out after only 6 months. This has happened to about 6 out of 15 bulbs in t...

How to make an impact on green computing: target audiences
This thought was triggered by this debate regarding individual vs. policy change. Sustainable, or at minimum, least-harmful, computing is important for individuals to buy into, but a handful of individuals cannot make a worldwide change. To have a real and measurable impact on green computing, I bel...

There need not be an either/or choice between individual responsibilty and large-scale policy. Without individual commitment to energy conservation, we cannot pass policy that gets us there communally, at least, not in a democratic society. If more individuals were willing to pay higher gas taxes, w...

#30 on Time's "Global Warming Survival Guide"
A screen saver is not an energy saver. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 75% of all the electricity consumed in the home is standby power used to keep electronics running when those TVs, DVRs, computers, monitors and stereos are "off." The average desktop computer, not including the monit...

What I meant to say was that that fact probably makes it real hard for small system integrators to offer low power systems. A true "Green Computing" ethic would recognize: 1. There's no such thing as Green Computing, just ways of mitigating the damage done by computing (and just about every other a...

When does manufacturing, etc. outweigh energy savings?
I'm moved to ask this after reading about this solar-powered Nintendo DS List . It strikes me that the manufacturing overhead thrown into that solar panel, plus whatever it took to ship it (not to mention the spray-paint these guys used) would outweigh any energy savings generated. OTOH, pumping up ...

Seems like a fun, if somewhat catchall/eclectic of a compilation. On that list, the wooden PC bothers me the most.
