Is that a Mac mini on your desk? :D Where exactly is your computer/where does it make noise? One idea would be to make a wall/shelf enclosure for the pc in the other room out of "dry wall" | | | |_________ | | | _____ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | o | | | | O | | ----------------------------...

pentium M notebook or subnotebook for SILENCE

Hi, Is it possible to get a silent notebook with pentium M 1,7Gh, intel graph. pro 2 in a 12"? example: http://www.prestigio.com/products/show.cfm/notebooks/Visconte/Visconte_120 Or is it better to get a subnotebook, like sharp's mm20 or mm10 for example: http://www.sharpsystems.com/products/pc_note...

Hi,

is there a software solution for reducing fan speed on a HP/Compaq presario 2500?
Or perhaps some undervolting/underclocking possibilty?

Thanks

seems that my nec2500 isn't loud it was MEDIA's fault! I had two DVD's which were really loud, I copied one to another DVD+ and it is now very quiet (as 12x should be), there is no need to change speed when watchind divx from CD media in nec, I now use "hdparm -E 4 /dev/hdd" (in linux), to set lower...

I tried 'hdparm -E 4 /dev/hdc' and it works now, BUT just for CD-ROM media?!?

I can play DivX at 1,2,4,16 speed...but when I put in a DVD it doesn't respond to any command I write. Strange.

hdparm-ing dvd drive

Hi, I own a NEC2500 DVD. It burns CD/DVD's quietly as well as all normal operations. It just gets loud when watching DVD's or DivX CD's. I have Linux installed and I tried issuing command "hdparm -E 4x /dev/hdc". But when I start playback with Mplayer the drive still spins fast the same way as befor...

I just bought NEC2500, it burns CD/DVD quietly.

But when watching a DVD or a DIVX CD it gets loud, just enough to be annoying when watching a movie.

Has anyone similar experience with other/same DVD drives?

Thanks

well, I didn't meant burn in literal sense, but as you said...he told me this "thingy" could work more and thus fail and then needed to replace, a bit annoing after experiecing my vendors's policy on warranty/service. at 1.64 stock voltage I get. around 47C idle and some 53-55C under load (1h of mp3...

I have undervolted the cpu to 1.55 V, that's approx. 0.1V lower than default (1.64).

I will do some testing and measurements to see if it is enough cool...if I get lm_sensors to work :(.

Thanks.

undervolting novice

Hi, I have an epox 8rda+, athlon xp 2500+. I would like to optimaly/safely undervolt CPU a bit to reduce heat that is produced in order to run TT silentboost's fan a really low RPM (800-1200) using Zalman fanmate. By optimaly/safely I mean the system has to be 100% stable and I want to get just enou...

:)
i tried to disassemble the laptop but no success.
I removed every screw but a fair amount of force would be needed to remove the cover, so I stopped.

I guess hardware solution is out of the question

help needed to decide, please

Hi, first of all, great site! I am planning to buy a new computer and my primary goal is to make it as silent as possible with some modding if needed (replacing fans...) and of course small. Performance is not that much important (web + image creation, text processing), therefore I can change proces...
