Yes milk crates are awesome for many things, and as far as i can tell, you just cant buy the real ones. The ones you can buy at k-mart/target/etc are a cheap imitation, made of inferior and flimsier plastic. A method my friend swears by for getting the good crates is to go grocery shopping at 1 in t...

Im not sure about your applications and cpu needs sgtpokey, but I would imagine that you could get by with alot less than a dual pIII for any type of server on a residential internet link. Interesting. So one guy tried another PSU and it didnt hum with the card. Hence, it must be the Zalman...I hope they find a good resolution to this issue, it sounds irritating. Have you tried different (older/newer) drivers?

My other thought is that maybe something about that video card (ie power consumption level, or frequency) Is affecting the PSU. That card is definatly power hungry. Try swapping the PSU or Video card and see if it still happens.

I have to admit that I find it somewhat hard to imagine that your video driver has anything to do with coil whine in your PSU. Check to make sure its not coming from the monitor, as monitors definatly hum various pitches in different modes. Try turning off the monitor after windows is loaded and see...

ive been using a via c3 800 mhz fanless for a while now, and its plenty a power for a server/gateway/firewall. Depending on the software, you could get away with way less than that. For a home server, your limiting factor is going to be bandwidth by far over cpu power, unless you have a residental t...

My experience with a Via C3 800 is that it "feels" like it compares to a PII running at about half that speed. Benchmarks Ive seen show this gut reaction to be not to far from the truth in terms of benchmarks. My opinion is use the c3 when you dont need performance, i.e. web browsing, email, listeni...

I agree that a abnormally high amount of failing drives is a big problem. And I also think that if IBM had something to share with us about their drives and didnt, that is very bad business. However, despite personal accounts of failing drives, as of yet I see no conlclusive evidence on the issue. I...
