Aagh, that's why dual-core will be needed, to run the bleedin' new virtual reality interface thingy, or whatever it is they are getting up to

Speaking of 64-bit, I don't think Yonah will be 64-bit since that would require the use of more transistors which would increase power consumption. Maybe Intel will do it, but maybe not. Yonah is 32 bit, but its replacement Merom, which is due out the 2nd half of next year is 64 bit. I don't think ...

I'm just glad to see that Intel are going to be back in the game on the desktop from next year; I'm all for more choice. Whatever AMD come up with, at least Intel are going to be useable again. For the last 18 months or so my easy choices have been AMD desktop and Intel laptop. With Dothan now an ea...

Overclocked Dothans already outperform AthlonFX-57. For gaming, it's 10% faster than Athlon64 clock-by-clock. And overclocked FX-57s outperform overclocked Dothans, so? Isn't the relevant point here that Dothan and FX have a similar IPC and not how high they overclock. Of course FX is released at h...

64 bit will be old hat by 2 years from now Looked at purely from the hardware side, it’s still going to be relatively new. No manufacturer even currently has a line-up of CPUs that are all 64 bit compliant. Add in all the legacy 32 bit systems and in 2 years time only a minority of systems will be ...

64 bit will be old hat by 2 years from now I can’t see 64 bit being of much use to many people until after Vista has been out for about 6 months or so and native applications released; so that’s about 2 years then. The hat should be wearing in nicely by then :) Well AMD have dual core Turion’s out ...

I’ve read a lot of sites for information on Intel’s plans for next year as they sound worth following. I couldn’t find any figures for the TDP of Merom though; did anybody find any numbers for these parts and I don’t mean the low voltage parts? 65W for Conroe as a desktop part sounds good enough to ...

AGP 2X/4X 3.3V/1.5V card on AGP 8X 1.5V Motherboard?

Can I use a Radeon 7000 rated as 2X/4X (3.3V/1.5V) on a Socket 754 motherboard, which is rated as 8X 1.5 volts only? I’m not concerned about 3D performance (obviously), but want to make sure that the voltages are compatible. Also, any idea on how this card compares to a FX5200 in terms of power cons...

I’m looking at Athlon 64 boards and some of them that interest me don’t support undervolting in the BIOS, but do support Cool ‘n’ Quiet. I’ve been using FX5200 cards for a while, as they are generally passively cooled with decent 2D performance and quality. Mats, The over-clocking potential of a Celeron M in a desktop board is not of much relevance in this context, as we are discussing inexpensive laptops which are very unlikely to offer any form of over-clocking.
