Been out of the SPCR scene for 3 years.. what's good now?

Hi there! I used to be a quite active member on here, but I haven't posted for over three years. This is largely due to me satisfied in having built, with great help from this website and forums, a powerful and silent computer. I have not been bothered by computer noise so have not had any reason to...

Re: engineer

However with working CPU cooling it's not the case. Even after the "steady state" is reached, the cpu has a different temperature than ambient air, so this is not an equi librium. The heatsink is not in an equilibrium too, it has a thermal gradient. The "closer" to cpu, the hotter. ... So in short,...

seems to be completely unavailable in australia :(
(despite them having a big picture of it on samsung.com.au when you go to the optical drives section?!)

any other external slot loading drives people can recommend?
edit: or an online shop that will post internationally?

would it be impossible to run this drive from the usb ports on the side of my monitor? And is it really true that one fan, even if it is quiet, will go undetected if there is a HD to hide it? if the fans are spinning slow enough, yes! at least in my case and for my ears, it is true - the system has a 2.5" samsung drive sitting on soft foam, fanless psu, and two 120 mm fans push-pulli...

A challenge not worth it if all you are after is silence and you have room for a setup that can accommodate fans. What do you mean by this? If the system works equally well as one with fans and if it is not more expensive then why shouldn't it be "worth it"? i would say it is not possible to have t...

well i can easily batch-convert the png to bmp or jpg or whatever if that would make it any less of an 'odd conversion'. surely something must exist to do this because there are countless ebooks floating around the web made from scanned images... what i want it for is scanning my tons of sheet music...

as long as you are using hard drive based storage, there is no point to aim for fanless - a single 2.5" hard drive will be louder than a good quality fan eg nexus 120mm at 5V (~550rpm). the fan will provide significantly better airflow than natural convection alone
