Suspended hard drives are great. The shoelaces work like a charm. I'm sure you can get a better elastic dampener but the shoelaces are good enough for me.

I'm probably never going to hardmount the drives again.

My temps seem to be fine. If you click the reference link in my V1000 page, you can see that people get varying results. For most people it works like a charm but in my case I don't think it'll worth it enough to do any modification. Oh, and I keep my room quite tidy and dusty free so I haven't had ...

Oops, I updated the thread with my current temperatures, but they aren't really that big of a gap. I've tested unplugging everything and the loudest things are the only moving components: the Nexus fans, the Spinpoints, the Zalman fan, and the PSU fan. They all contribute a relatively equivalent amo...

Hitting a wall

Hi folks,

You can check out my system in my signature. I'm nearing a limit of what else there is to silence without sacrificing these marvellous temperatures, great stability, and longevity of my components. My computer is quiet, but not silent. Anyone got any clues?

Thanks,
David

I called EAR about the HDD and Fan mounting sample kit. Oddly enough the EAR employee who returned my call asked me if I was an engineer, and where I was employed. Luckily, I am. Just a heads up. They may be limiting the samples they send out (perhaps because so many people have called requesting th...

One thing I noticed when I was at the student store was that all the white Apple keyboards were dirty. That might be something you want to take into consideration when you purchase a white keyboard.

I'll do a mini review later, but this keyboard isn't as quiet as the diNovo I had earlier. I'd rank it a little quieter than the eluminX I had. The keys are rather shaky, and make noise if you try to push them left and right. Although, it is quieter than this Logitech Media keyboard, and roughly on ...

I ended up taking off that fan shroud and it made a slight difference. A noticable 1-2¨C drop in both case and CPU temperatures.

teejay: I just keep the shroud on because I don't notice any difference with it on or off. I have to chop out the rear grill on it. I updated the original post with a link to a mod using a CD as a guide. Thanks, I love this case. Nefarious: I wouldn't try to make the front fan blow hot air out. That...

IBM Thinkpad X40 - This is a silent notebook.

I recently received an IBM Thinkpad X40 1.4GHz Pentium 738 Dothan. I purchased this model after using my friend's 1.2GHz X40, which was also, literally, inaudible. The fan does not turn on unless experiencing load (namely installing apps) but for browsing the web, office use, or other CPU unintensiv...

Kensington SlimType keyboard - Quiet keyboard

I'm willing to try this keyboard to replace my noisy Logitech Media Keyboard. I typed with it in the student store today and it is pretty quiet! Here it is: http://images10.newegg.com/productimage/23-155-003-01.JPG Also comes in a Mac version: http://images10.newegg.com/productimage/23-155-011-01.JP...

Today I tested out a few keyboards at the university store.

Ranked from the quietest to the loudest:
1. Kensington keyboard http://www.kensington.com/html/4826.html
2. IBM keyboard
3. Apple keyboard

They were all quiet, but that's probably because the room I was in was rather loud.

Personally, I like this cooler better than the Zalman ZM-80DHP simply because of its light weight. Compare the VM-101's weight of 220g to Zalman's weight of 330g. That's a 50% difference!

Now if I didn't have an inverted motherboard, I'd be all over this!

Actually, Zalman states that the strength of the thermal tape on the heatsinks increases by 90% upon "curing." However, I have seen one of these for sale on a bulletin board where the person did succeed in removing the RAMsinks without trouble. However, they could no longer be used.

Maglev fans have always been around, albeit in small sizes. Thanks for the link, as this is the first Maglev fan that I've encoutered with a diameter greater than 70mm.

The Sunon 40mm fan for the Swiftech MCX-159 is a MagLev fan. Nonetheless, it is very small.

Odd how they don't post the sound dBa.

There's only two versions of the diNovo, the one for notebooks (reviewed in this post) and the "full-blown" Bluetooth version, which can be had for ~$165 or less. Yes, it used to be $200+, but not anymore. Also, the temperature feature is not software based. I tested it around a heater and the tempe...

Actually, Amazon.com has this now for $117, and CompUSA has it for $100. It also features portability, the freedom of wireless, and more thoughtful aesthetics than the UltraX. Don't forget the added functionality of the SetPoint software. The $200 Bluetooth version is also quickly dropping in price,...
