c00z: Seems to be actually a good cooler, just was stressing it too far I think I wonder about that ... do heatpipes have a dropoff in efficiency if they get over a certain temp (within OC'ed CPU heat output range)? 10C drop from a 20% voltage drop seems like a big difference. (edit: I meant a 20% p...

So I bought some AS5 and an 92mm Papst 3412N/2GL 35,9 CFM and am running it at 1500RPM (27 CFM?). Temps are still the same idle 45C. Now I have the side of my case open and idle temps dropped to 39-40C, so I guess I should try to improve my case airflow. I also tried bending the HS clip a little bi...

#$%#!! An 80mm fan ?!? Dang, I missed that. no, you want a 92mm fan. Anecdotally, a 92mm is worth a 5C drop for similar RPM/noise levels. I went with an 80 first and it was a little disappointing tho I can't remember the exact figures. I know TR lets you put an 80mm fan on the SI97 but multiple repo...

Re: SI-97 installation/temps/fan??

I tried searching but couldn't find answer for this installation question so heres another SI-97 thread. I recently installed SI-97 on my xp3000 (@2200mhz 1.7V) with a 80mm Panaflo FBA08A12L1BX running at full speed (1900rpm). I installed the hs with the supplied shim and thermalright paste. After ...

Update: using some heavy plastic folders scavenged from Office Depot, I built a an "L" shaped duct around the 120mm fan, which extends from the back of the case all the way past the front mounted fan on the Hyper 6. So it covers the side and the top completely, forcing all air from the 120mm fan to...

well it could just be that the new fan/HS is blowing warm air on the area where your mobo sensor is - or similar change in case airflow.

I've seen quite a few people having high case temps with the Sonata. (No intake?) And quite a few people having problems with non-flat XP-90 XP-120 (not so much with SI-97, maybe warpage is more of a problem with the integrated heat spreader setup.) No, the heatsink orientation is not an issue. It u...

I own both and the SI-97 works better, plus a 92mm fan is better for low noise + decent CFM than an 80. I thought the HT101 would duct nicely to rear exhaust (that was before I got my tin snips) but it didn't work out that well. An intake duct in the case side passively feeds the fan on the SI-97 no...

even if the base is pretty flat and temps are good, taking off the nickel can give you a little temp drop - 1 or 2C. That was my experience. just as a side comment: there are those who will point out that you can't make a base as flat by hand as you can by machine. In fact, after I lapped mine, I ch...

lausmeister - Take a look at the base of the HS - is it really flat? Do you feel anything when you scrape a fingernail across it? Also, if you hold a straightedge (good ruler) against the base and hold it up to the light, do you see a gap? A gap of any size indicates a warped base. You can smear a l...

neh, heatpipes with internal wicks (as they all seem to be these days) are almost completely indifferent to orientation. an SI-97 has no thermal connection, radiator to base, except for heatpipes. another tiny bit of advice: use the black foam block that comes with the SI-97 to hold the clip in place during install, otherwise it's a nightmare with the clip wandering around. another alternative would be to remove the fan, and have a passive side duct directly above the 7700, and turn all case fans to exhaust, and seal miscellaneous holes. Upside: you have the combined power of multiple fans pulling air in through the side duct, so this means you can have the other multi...

In a way, the bottom fins are annoying, because they mean you're dumping heat in the case not into your duct.

In practice, I doubt they make a lot of difference.

Ducting all the way thru - that's good. Are you adding a fan to do that, or are you going to use an existing case fan?

The input power at 12 volts is 2.16 amps according to http://www.directron.com/120l1a.html 2.16 = 12*N divide both sides by 12 = .18 amps per fan Thus- 7 volts * ....

I just want to mention that, just because it stands up, doesn't mean it's better for ducting necessarily. The outflow of the heatsink won't align perfectly with a case exhaust, and it may actually be easier to have a 90-degree turn in a duct from the rear case exhaust down to the mobo than try to du...

Fans are most of the noise. Whatever the case, it can only do so much about loud fans. So you want to be able to reduce fans as much as possible while keeping airflow passable and case temps below "ouch" (this will let you reduce CPU HS fan speed as well.) So first you have to find a case that actua...

well the same article on electomigration that I read said also that electromigration is self-healing to some extent, because those same ions can move to fill up voids.

so would that account for "burn-in"? Little flaws getting filled?

Alas, I've failed completely to convey my vision ... ! What I mean is: Use case fans to move air through the heatsink. They can be many and/or large (hence quiet for the CFM they move.) In other words: A sealed case with a ducted Zalman 7000 heatsink, perhaps with no fans or a minimal fan on the HS ...

The ultimate quiet fan cooled case design?

OK, I'm thinking like this: The more area across which you're pushing air, the quieter it is. (For example, 4 fans at 5v is a lot quieter than 1 fan at 12v for the same CFM.) So you'd like to put a 160mm or a 240mm fan on your CPU HS if possible. Well, that may not be practical. So then you should u...
