Best filesystem for SSD that windows can run on would be FAT right? NTFS keeps writing to the disc for unknown reason. I also hear FAT is faster, and it's fragmentation problem will be a non-issue for SSD. But FAT is less secure and also less safe. A file system doesn't "write to the disc" for any ...

I'm with Nick705 on this one. Video encoding performance vastly benefits from having different source and destination drives -- reading and writing those incredible amounts of data to the same drive really slows things down. In fact, I'd go so far as to suggest having 3 drives: 1 for system/swap fil...

It meant I didn't have to use the 5-user Apple 2E networked computer lab system at school anymore. With all 5-users going, it could take more than 20 minutes to compile a 100-line Pascal ...

I recently bought a pair of PX-100s to replace a pair of Sporta-Pros that broke (the left earpiece connector broke - mostly my fault). The Koss were comfortable and sounded great on my Creative Zen MP3 player. The Sennheiser are also very comfortable and sound great as well, perhaps clearer and brig...

Re: Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 400Gb Ide
Oh God, how noisy that HDD is. I just installed it to external case It had sharp seek noise now while I am writing data it has very loud and sharp tone while its writing data or seeking. I mean you couldn't believe that I have two other Seagate 7200.6's and those are virtually silent. When this bar...

Hmm. I wonder if the "Preemptive Wear Leveling" feature causes any "meowing" noise as has been reported in some other drives. As far as being used in standard desktop systems, I would think the firmware for these drives "gives up" more quickly on read and write failures and would therefore not be su...

You probably just got a bad sample drive. I have two of these drives - one has been in a TiVo for about 18 months with AAM enabled and is very quiet. The other has been in my desktop for the same amount of time without AAM enabled and it is fairly quiet (I don't care about seek noise so much in my d...

Try to remember that, if both surfaces were perfectly flat and smooth, then no Thermal Interface Material (TIM) would be needed at all. In the real world, though, there are microscopic gaps on apparently smooth surfaces and it is only these tiny gaps that need to have the TIM. Metal to Metal contact...

I built a system for my brother around the Biostar TForce965 motherboard in a Solo with a Ninja Rev.B and there were no clearance issues at all. This motherboard was favorably reviewed at Anandtech and is a good overclocking platform. It falls into the "budget" category though, and does not have som...

The YS is designed for use in a redundant RAID configuration, and shouldn't be used in other setups. If you have a damaged block, it will give up trying to read the block after only 7 seconds instead of persisting for minutes like a regular desktop hard drive. Western Digital call this feature "tim...

I wouldn't assume that simply staying under the manufacturer's max temp is enough. Higher heat shortens the life of hard drives -- you'd be hard pressed to argue against that. Members of this community have higher standards than these "bare minimums". That said, your temps look pretty good. Perform ...

None of this thicker/thinner stuff is relevant; what you want to look at is the thermal conductivity; annoyingly Arctic Silver give thermal conductivity in non-standard units, so it is hard to compare with this solution. Flash memory is really not all that fast -- certainly not "super" fast. In fact, most CF cards are probably WAY slower than modern hard drives.
