Guys, why don't you pick up one of these:

For power measurement. It even comes with a CSR for current measurement. Not sure what it cost though. Them a simple I x V for power.

1. Most people don't post positive reviews, but for a bad drive most will post a bad review. Why would you, the drive works, done, but if it doesn't, most want everyone to know. (wish they'd base all % by amounts sold, not number of reviews, so we could see real numbers) 2. Most people don't do any ...

If you can find one with 4 5.25" bays, you could use 2 (5.25") to 3 (3.5") adapters to get your needed bays.

Or one with 3 3.5 and 2 5.25s (with 1 adapter).

Unless you are talking super fast drives, with large files (>250MB), the drive speed isn't that big of deal. It's when you have lots of small fil...

Re: USB powered external 3.5 enclosure

No, not even with a Y cable. Standard USB ports do not supply the 12V needed to power a standard desktop drive. A Y cable will allow for higher amperage, but still at 5 V. There is, technically a USB-PD (power delivery specification), but I am not aware of that implemented in any desktop computers ...

Re: Asus Z87M-Plus stuck in reboot loop (every few seconds)

If that doesn't help you should remove the mainboard from the cases and put it on a non-concudting surface (the boards anti static bag on top of the carton does fine). Before placing a live mobo on top of an anti-static bag....you might want to take out the ol' ohm meter. That shiny/metallic lookin...

First, if all we are talking about is the CPU, yes, just air cool it, and ignore the message below. I built a H20-320 cooled system just last summer. The pump on this system is suppose to be very load. First, you can't hear the pump running if ANY fan is running, even at <5V (these are very quiet fa...

Re: server with laptoplike performance and power consumption

I've seen what people do to crack HDMI encoding, I think you want to avoid that if at all possible. Analog video capture would use way too much disk space. If at all possible use a tuner. You might want to search again, it's MUCH easier/simpler/inexpensive than you think. I was truly shocked at how...

Re: Is it possible to build a system w/ all digital VRMs?

First, the digital part of VRM is what makes the noise. If you make a analog Voltage regulator module, you would get no noise from the power supply. Of course the furnace squirrel cage fan would be a bit noisy.

I guess a third option is to just use an old laptop. The primary disadvantage is not being able to use normal expansion cards for special purposes... (video import card maybe?) There's USB-based tuner cards. Heck, there's tuner cards with NICs - you can just plug into the router. I wonder if there'...

Could you use this: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/webstore2/webstore_hdpvr2-1512.asp to do you encoding. I know it uses a LOT less power (10W) than any CPU or GPU to encode with. Then use your CPU to transcode the "container"? (I know most of the media servers have this built in, and takes a LOT les...

Not sure how much they use at idle. I've stopped adding DVD drives and use thumb drives. They can hold more data than even a Blu-Ray, and are faster.

Some of my systems still have DVD drives for ripping.

I'm not an expert, only building 2 water cooling systems in my PC building years (~20), but I could not hear the pump on either, even with the fans off! The only time I've ever heard a pump running, was when there was air in the pump! I'd say the only true disadvantage of water cooling, is getting c...
