Re: Important tip for selecting/installing fans.

Those mobo fan pins usually only allow for a maximum of 1A current, check your fan specifications before connecting to avoid fried components. I would not connect more than 2 fans per connector, unless you're absolutely sure what you're doing. The start-up current for fans can greatly exceed their r...

Re: How many case fans do I really need?

A couple more considerations: - You'll want positive internal case pressure (more intake than exhaust airflow) to reduce dust buildup. - Your intake airflow should equal or exceed the airflow of internal fans (cpu and gpu coolers, radiators etc) to make sure they're fed with cooler outside air, rath...

Hm bugger, A71 would be good if it had 6 5.25" bays, is the door in the older V2110 any better with airflow? I noticed you had already commented on it in another thread but it looks like it could be a wee bit better?

The Nexus seems to fit the bill, except for that double front door thingy. Can the inner door be removed Don't worry about that inner door... outer door will do excellent work at blocking all airflow. How many drives you're trying to fit in? Completely blocking it just restricting? I can live with ...

Bump. Has anyone actually bought one? I'm looking for a new file server case with some rather tricky requirements: - minimum 6 free 5.25" front bays (for 2x 5in3 SATA backplanes). 9 free bays would be nice to allow for adding another backplane - must have a front door (don't want those backplanes bl...

According to smartctl the idle temps are around 40-42'C for the drives inside the supermicro backplanes, the highest I remember seeing are around 50'C. The Cooler Master cage is completely open, as in the only restrictions to airflow are the drives themselves. Disks inside that are between 30-34'C.

Mission impossible: Enlight EN-8950

I thought I'd start silencing my home file server, a project that has been long overdue. The specimen in question is an old Enlight EN-8950 server case, which to put it nicely, wasn't built with quiet operation in mind. This is what I have at the moment: Asus A8R-MVP Athlon 64 3200+ with some noisy ...

I've had this "same" pc since around '96 (obv every single component has been changed/upgraded several times). The upgrade from a Samsung F1 640GB system drive to a 80GB x25-m is the single most impressive upgrade to perceivable performance of the machine, ever, bar none, and by a wide margin. The s...

Hm, running 4 WD10EACS drives on an Adaptec 5805 under Ubuntu 8.10 server for a couple months 24/7, no sign of problems here. Power_On_hours around 1750 and Load_Cycle_Counts between 8 and 12.

I have two of the exact same enclosure, and replaced the stock fans with Delta AFB0912L Rev. A fans. The fans are reasonably quiet in my opinion. They definitely don't fit the "delta = obscenely loud" stereotype. You might also be interested in the details of my build that used the same Supermicro ...

Relatively quiet high CFM 92mm fan

I bought 2 SuperMicro CSE-M35T 5in3 SATA racks and want to replace the included 92mm Sanyo Denki vacuum cleaners. They're rated at 36dBA 55CFM at 2900rpm, which is a lot more noise than I'm happy with. The problem is I haven't been able to find an adequate replacement and would be grateful for any t...

I have the Lanparty UT nF3 and a Radeon AIW 9700Pro with the Arctic Silencer v3, and I can assure you you won't be able to fit any big heatsink on the NB. The Silencer sits directly on top of the NB, and anything higher just won't cut it. This was a big letdown for me, the zalman NB47J is completely...

Another lurker signing in. I pretty much only have experience with Sony and Plextor dvd-rws, and i've always thought the Plextor 708A to be reasonably quiet, both at idle and operation. Does anyone know if any of the mentioned models are notably more silent?
