great job. very stylish too. what are your temps like? Not bad, but not as good as I'd like. Everything but the chipset is below 40C at idle. I've been playing with overvolting/overclocking the CPU to as high as 3.8Ghz and 1.6v, and that sends it's load temp to 77C. The Northbridge is just stupidly...

I finally got around to building it!

Not according to the original plan, but not far off.

Noise is excellent, and will be increased with some damping/absorption materials.

Comments and questions welcome.

When I compare this to the ASUS UMPC I shelled out $1200 for, and what I use it for. It's amazing, I don't think I would notice the difference most of the time.

Right now I'm playing with 2 designs. One is counter-height without baffles and a tighter interior space, the other is full-height to the ceiling. Anything in between doesn't really give me much space back and makes things more awkward inside. 120mm fans will do fine I guess, better selection at lea...

The thought was to put the components that were more temperature sensitive (HDDs) on the bottom and ones that were less so (networking gear, PSUs) on the top. Also, I think if I get enough airflow through the chimney, the temp differential between intake and exhaust will not be significant. I was th...

This idea is evolving as I look/plan it more. It's looking like I'll be buying a house soon. So I have the option of doing building modifications! I'm playing with the idea of building it into a wall unit/desk configuration. I still want it central to the house, as the HTPC outputs HDMI to 4...

Yes. Heavy. ;)

I'll give wood a try first, something like 3/4" Oak? Perhaps with a different wood in the "working" parts of the box, so I can screw/unscrew bits without damaging the main frame.

Oh, I was also playing with the idea of casting it from concrete instead of building it from wood. That should stop the resonance issues ;)

I appreciate your attempts at ASCII art to describe something, but I can't see it thought my hangover.

Are you talking about angling the motherboards themselves into the airflow? Putting baffles above/around components to direct airflow onto the components?

And remember, sound doesn't act like light... Which can be good or bad, depending on situation. I know it doesn't, but what properties are you thinking of when you say that? I know sound can be transmitted 2 ways, vibration of the air and causing objects to vibrate. By preventing the outer chassis ...

The HDD mount is something I am still working on. What I will probably to is suspend each row separately. I'll sandwich each row with 2 copper plates, drilled for the purpose, then suspended. The plates would be drilled so that there was ~1" of space between the drives for airflow. If you think this...

I've been building quiet computers for a long time. Ok, not that long, maybe 5 years? But I've built around 40 of them for myself, my friends, and some of my clients. Always I've made compromises to achieve quiet; 2.5" drives, low-power GPUs, high operating temperatures, etc. I know how to build a q...

Thanks for all the comments. I'd completely forgotten about the floor and ceiling and their potential role WRT noise. Oops. I put the fans above the components because of 2 things: 1. I wanted the components lower in the tower for easier maintenance 2. I wanted the fans at one extreme or the other o...

scdr, I'm currently planning 2 high-powered machines and one low-powered one, all on the same level. The hard drives will be on a lower level because they are more sensitive to heat. 9 120mm fans just works too well to pass up, if any component isn't getting enough airflow, I can put on a larger hea...

Questions: I know that not giving sound a direct path out is a "good thing". I also know that having an airflow path of uniform cross-section is a "good thing". How can I make these two concepts work in a chimney? With 9 fans, I would want their speed to be dependant on the hottest computer at the t...

FlorisNielssen, Thanks for the response. Size: The reason for it's dimensions is that ATX motherboards are about 12" wide, and I want to be able to mount one on each side at the same height. Computing Chimney?

What is better than cooling a computer with just one fan? Cooling several computers with just one fan. ;) I'm sure I'm not the only one with more than one computer at/near my desk, and I've decided to take a holistic approach to cooling them. Basic concept: Wooden Chimney, approx 7 feet tall, ~14" o...

Nexus fans draw very little power. I'm pretty sure you could run 3 or 4 off the rated capability of the header.

Because of the hardware architecture, RAM is expected and must exist.
