My plans have been on hold since before christmas. The old plan was to do something with a mobile barton. I'm now looking at the i855GMem and thinking that it may be worth the premium for the low power. I read somewhere that the supplied HSF was very quiet. Did you try this? Was it too noisy? I will...

It looks like you have the same goal as me tweckstr (I believe a "Welcome to SPCR" is in order). I have a Nova-T and a Nova-S which I would like to get working with MythTV (I still need to test this out in my existing (noisy) system). 1) Shuttle XPC SB83G5 I think this only has 1 PCI slot. The other...

Small and Quiet seems to be a bit of a holy grail at the moment. I have a similar project in mind. I would like to use 2 TV cards, so I need 2 PCI slots. I have been going round in circles trying to come up with a solution: build my own case / go for a A64 with cool 'n' quiet / undervolt a mobile XP...

Perfect. This clarifies my ramblings. The original post was just me thinking out loud, but now it starts to look less crazy. There are a few threads with people building wooden cases and I have just discovered this - http://www.aerocool.com.tw/aerocool-files-v3/lubic.htm - so maybe the self-build is...

Good point. The PSU doesn't have to be at the top. So the wind tunnel at the bottom (drives front & PSU rear) with motherboard above?

If you want a small footprint then you should have a tall case. A flat case like this requires a large footprint. True, but it's shallowness that I really want. However, I have plenty of height so I'm happy to use that to reduce width. All I really want is to get the drives (both optical and hard d...

what could you possibly need more than like 1 or 2 PCI slots for, if that's all that's holding you back from SFF? just get a mb with onboard everything. :P How about: large vide card heatsink, decent quality sound card(read: non soundbastard), TV tuner, HDTV tuner. At the moment I need 2 PCI slots ...

Shallow Case

Clearly, when building a PC there are certain factors that are dependant on each other (power, silence, size) and a compromise may have to be reached. I want silence, expandability and a small footprint (especially depth). I want to play movies (DVD and xvid), watch and record TV, but not extreme ga...
