A bit late to reply now, but I discovered the problem was a software incompatibility. I had to upgrade the OS.

2 years on - new core2 system

It's been 2 years since I settled on my last fanless system (EPIA based). With the conroe now out and in stock, I think it might be a good time to upgrade the system. Again, I'm looking to run the system completely fanless as such I will opt for the slowest core2 chip (allendale based). Anyone tried...

great way to do it. i'd like to do the same but have no spare room to do this! i thought of the garage and using some wireless connection and having a dumb terminal with no HDDs in my room, but i'm not convinced what the lag on such a setup would be. currently, the HDD is the only noise making compo...

Seagate ST-340015A vs. ST-340014A (5400.1 and 7200.7)

Has anybody tested these two drives together? I have the 5400rpm and am getting another drive. Checking the specs on the seagate website gives: ACOUSTICS (bels) 5400.1 fluid bearing (typ/max-quiet/max-perf) _2.6/2.9/3.0 ACOUSTICS (bels) 7200.7 fluid bearing (typ/max-quiet/max-perf) _<2.2/2.7/3.5 How...

1ghz suggestions

Hello. I've been away from this board for a while having settled on my fanless solutions of using EPIA boards. However, I have started to use my main computer for photoshop editing and it is not fast enough. I'm looking for something that would be of the performance of a 1ghz P4 class machine. It ne...

VIA 800mhz fanless problems

I just though I'd report how I've been getting on with my fanless systems after using them for a while. On my 800mhz system (used primarily as a webserver), I noticed huge problems with occasional hanging and refusal to boot. In the end, I discovered that the heatsink is insufficient for dispersing ...

yes it is possible to put a custom splash screen on boot up. i was hacking bios code a few years back and noticed that there were provisions to put things like custom logos etc. (e.g. compaq and dell boot up screens) however, this involves modifying the firmware and uploading it. getting it wrong wi...

thanks for the reply. i'll check that out. it shouldn't be an issue with lack of power as it is on a 300W PSU that was enough to power a 'full' machine. the current setup is with an EPIA.

Does anybody have a recomendation for a quiet dvd drive? Mine sounds like a 747 taking off when it spins up. I've got a pretty quiet system, except for the optical drive. before buying a new drive, it might be worth looking for a firmware update. i know there are several drives where the firmware u...

PSU amplifies HDD noise?

I put together a new system and noticed the seek on my 5400rpm seagate drive to be a lot noisier than on another machine. Upon further investigation, I noticed that the noise was not coming from the HDD but was coming from the PSU but the noise was exactly the same as the HDD seek noise amplified! H...

Never mind 300Mhz to 600Mhz, think 300Mhz to 2.0+ GHz and you're rockin! if you can get a completely fanless 2ghz working, i'd be interested in hearing about it. obviously, if i can get more performance without an increase in noise, i'll go for it. i considered a mobile p4 system as i think some of...

What sort of motherboard is required to run a Mobile Celeron (600mhz)? I think this Celeron is a socket 495? Can anyone confirm this? Are there socket 495 motherboards?

My current silentpc (fanless celeron 300) is falling to pieces and i'm thinking of upgrading.

So, from this, it looks like the performance is good enough for general usage (e.g. web browsing, email, programming, downloading stuff) and may even feel faster due to the lower seek time, but it'll definitely lag behind if you try to use it for, say, media encoding. from the data you've provided,...

One (poor) option would be to set a drive spin down time of 1 minute and have it spun down most of the time. But then I'd need a drive with a very quiet spin up - not sure these exist.

Yes. Though they are usually quieter than CRTs. If you don't have a fanless computer or are not in a silent room, you may not notice it.

Removed that and went back to paper. There might be differences between different b...

can the EPIA be underclocked? i've seen the fanless versions for sale here in the UK but the price i've got is more than i can get the 900mhz version for.

if the cpu can be underclocked in the bios, i'd run it at a slower speed and remove the fan.
