Re: power supply test at anandtech.com

So this time wy didn't Anandtech mention how fast those PSUs were or how they "interfered" with memory contents, as was done in their 2003 review?

Re: Hitachi 5K3000 2TB experiences

I got 10 slow sectors with MHDD's surface scan, compared to 2-3 with my 2TB Samsung HD204UI and 0 with my 2TB WD20EARS and 1TB Hitachi 7K1000.C drives. Zeroing out the drive didn't change anything. Also the exact LBAs of the slow sectors change slightly on each test run, by more than just a few numb...

Re: SpinPoint EcoGreen F4EG 2TB HD204UI/Z4

I have a 2T, F4 data drive in my WHS. I installed and ran the tool (made by Acronis). It reports the drive as Not a Samsung Advanced Format Disk , and a greyed out icon for the drive indicates Optimally aligned partition. Same here, and I used Windows XP to partition and verified the misalignment.

I was going to ask how to install additional floppy power connectors. ;)

I don't like cutting off connectors because if a single strand of copper wire protrudes even a tiny amount beyond the insulation, it can cause a short. So at the very least I stretch the insulation to cover the strands.

Don't attach anything to the heatsink with the high voltage transistors attached to it because: 1. If the thin insulation on any of those transistor fails, the heatsink will have high voltage riding on it. 2. Some PSUs are designed so that heatsink is connected to high voltage, and I believe it's fo...

It could be from a washer inside the fan. Try pulling the fan blades all the way forward to move it. If that doesn't do the trick, push the blades all the way backward.

You may want to check Directron.com or Newegg.com for their Fortron-Source PSUs because they have 300W models for as little as $30.

If you had asked yesterday, I would have recommended either the 350W Antec with case or the 500W Antec because each was just $15 after rebate.

It looks like the goop Delta uses.

I've read that the best way to reduce coil buzz is to remove the coil and soak it in warm varnish, preferrably in a vacuum chamber so it seeps in deeply.

Here's a 250W reference design from On Semi that's at least 80% efficient:

There's probably a fixed resistor in the 10,000s of ohms range that the fan control circuit uses to set the voltage at one of the thermistor's leads, and it may even be connected to that lead. Changing its value should make the fan speed change.
