Re: Scythe Kozuti Low Profile CPU Heatsink
After confirming the Big Shuriken woudn't fit in a Coolermaster Elite 100 on an AM3 board, I picked up one of these since it would easily fit, height wise. Two issues I found with the HSF, one minor and more of an annoyance, but the other kind of a deal killer for what I wanted it for. First, their ...

Re: AMD HSF that will fit in a Cooler Master Elite 100?
Need to correct my prior post. The Big Shuriken and Big Shuriken 2 are a few mm too tall to fit and have the lid close. The Scythe Kozuti will fit height wise, but the heatpipes may hit your RAM or chipset cooler, or both. I'd hoped to put an Asus M4A88T-I Deluxe +45W Athlon X4 in the Elite 100 and ...

Re: OCZ Vertex 2. Reliable yet?
The Vertex 2 line has been reliable for a while now. I think you may be confusing it with the Vertex 3 line, which had some issues upon release that have only recently been corrected via firmware updates. The most recent firmware seems quite stable - enough so that I've picked up a few for use in my...

The Scythe Big Shuriken and Big Shuriken 2 will fit. Just.

Re: I give you the ANTEC SOLO II
It would depend mainly on the cooler being used and how close it sits to the bar and the bottom of the PSU. With original Solo, the support bar is basically flush with the bottom of the PSU, and you really only need about and inch to drop down the PSU enough to clear the top cover. It think that dit...

Re: vesa mountable matx cases
Coolermaster makes the Elite 100, which will take MiniITX or MicroATX boards, though the latter may have some items blocked as they'll be under the PSU.
I have one and it works pretty well. I did a test mounting to a monitor, but I'm not using it that way at this time.

I've been using the Scythe Kama 92mm PWM fan in several systems now with good results. Using speedfan I've found that with the Ultra-90 (the Ultima's predecessor) I can crank the RPM down quite a bit and maintain good cooling, and it becomes very quiet below 2400RPM. I do wish all fan headers were P...

Presumably the RAID edition is tuned for better performance and longevity while in a RAID setup than a non-RAID version. As an example, you'd likely see a measurable difference in performance from a Seagate 7200.11 vs an ES2, despite the two drives being close to identical physically. Ideally, I'd a...

OK. Your dad is nuts. RAM install on a system that's running? 5400RPM Maxtor HD? He's got a perfectly good 80mm or 92mm rear exhaust port blocked up with plexiglass and a dinky 60mm fan from an old Taisol heatsink, and a 60mm Coolermaster fan on what looks to be an all aluminum HSF from the Socket 3...

The Silencer 610 is very quiet, and I've only once loaded one enough to get the fan to really spin up to a point where I noticed it over the rest of the system. And that was with every drive and fan I could manage to hook up to it, including some 120mm Delta's and an ancient ST-225R Hard drive. I've...

The heatsinks you used are not the best choices for use in the case. This was known. It isn't important that the best HS for the case be used; mostly, we're trying to keep the system the same as in previous htpc case reviews for comparison purposes. I rechecked the height clearance -- it's ~23mm ab...

Interesting read. I rebuilt my HTPC a couple of months ago using the other sibling of those two cases, the LC20B. Same base chassis, different bezel. The heatsinks you used are not the best choices for use in the case. I went with the Thermalright Ultra-90 (soon swapping for an Ultima-90), as that u...

Powdercoated interiors. 8) Yes, it would increase the cost of the case, but it'd be much more scratch resistant, and they could offer a wide assortment of colors. Actually, I would not mind seeing a chrome interior on a case with a window. Actually, that's probably the only reason I'd have for buyin...

1. Yes, the current Silencer's are black. The older models were silver/gray. 2. Not very warm. I haven't taken precise temps, but I can say that they don't get as warm to the touch as a Seagate 7200.7 does. I've got a pair of Silencer 360's and a 410 currently. They are both very quiet. The 410 is a...

Ralf: I've been meaning to ask you if you'd had a chance to test out one of the new Silencers. They're not the same units as before. They're using a Nidec fan in them that's very, very quiet. I've got 2 of the 360W and one 410W so far, and they're all much quieter than my older Silencer 275s are, an...
