Of course the CPU fan is PWM (its in the AM3 specification) but so is "System Fan 1". The odd thing is I downloaded the manual for the Gigabyte 870 board and while sys_fan1 is 4 pins the manual has the 4th pin (the PWM pin) labeled as "reserve" instead of "control" as it is on the CPU fan header. Th...

I was looking at this Asus AMD 870. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131647 I downloaded the manual but it didn't say anything about 3 pin fans on the system header so thats not much of a help. Maybe I'll check out the Gigabyte 870 board, I've had good luck with their boards ...

Do 4 Pin PWM Fan Headers Need PWM Fans to Control Speed?

I'm looking to build a new system and most of the boards I am looking at now have a 4 pin PWM header for the main system fan. Am I going to need a PWM fan to control the speed on this header? I was planning on reusing my Lian Li PC6070 which has two 80mm exhaust fans and I'd rather not have to track...

Hopefully its good, too bad the fan is non PWM though.

Though it may not be that much of a loss since most of the Zalman fans I've heard lately have too much motor noise anyway.

785G Board for HTPC

I'm looking for a 785G board for my forth coming HTPC rebuild. I'm looking for the following features. -DDR3 support: I don't want to invest anything into DDR2 at this point. -Sideport RAM: May do some light gaming. -Support for Speedfan. -ATX or mATX, case is Lian Li C30I. My first inclination is t...

HS/F for Athlon II based HTPC

So I’m going to rebuilding my HTPC (currently based on an old Athlon XP 2800) and am looking at a Athlon II + 785G combo. I’ve used the stock Phen II HS/F with success for quiet builds but I don’t know if the Athlon II gets the same heatsink (I heard it doesn’t), anyone have any experience w...

I was thinking this thread has perhaps outlived it's usefulness since many of the issues that this thread address have largely being eliminated. Almost all motherboards are passively cooled and since socket 775 and AM2 all boards have PWM control over the CPU fan. In my opinion those are most import...

Let's review. Looking for a fan for a ~2500 RPM fan for PSU. Panflo and Delta 92mm 2450 RPM fans buzz, but all existing fans do not. Need to find out why and how to resolve it. Several posters suggest it could be due to PWM control. There's no PWM. So what else could cause a fan to buzz, but only a...

Is the Delta buzzing like the Panaflos or is it bearing noise? If its buzzing from low freq PWM then it should be absent when you run it at full speed from 12v. Bearing noise will always be present. I have a 80mm Sanyo Denki sitting on my Alpha heatsink, its by far the quietest ball baring fan I've ...

Re: Buzzing when undervolting 92mm Rexus Panaflo mid speed f

After testing and using the fan, I noticed what may have appeared to be vibrations transferred to the case a first, but it turned out to be motor buzz. Lowering the voltage would cause the motor to buzz. The lower the voltage, the greater the buzz intensity, to the point that it would drive me craz...

The board does have fan headers that you can undervolt through the BIOS and the gigabyte "eztune" software. However, I would recommend against using these, on any motherboard. The reason is that most (all?) MB fan headers use swtiching voltage regulation to control the fan speed. This causes an aud...

I'm not sure what the deal is but it looks like nobody has any stock of the Sapphire HDMI PI-AM2RS690MHD. I called a couple of places and it doesn't sound like they'll be getting them back in either.

So it's either the Biostar or skip the 690 all together.

ew. in the world of solid caps, I didnt think a high end manufacturer would be using big thumper blackies still. that's odd. Well electrolytes are fine (and actually have a few advantages over solid caps) as long as they are high quality quality. People see solid caps and associate them with qualit...

After looking around a bit more I've come across the Sapphire HDMI PI-AM2RS690MHD, which looks like a very interesting board.

Better features then the Asus and Biostar, which is a plus. Though it looks like the Biostar may be built a bit better with the use of solid caps around the CPU.

Re: Motherboard capable of changing fanspeeds?

According to Gigabyte's page your board supports the BIOS level "Smart Fan" so you should be able to get at least control over the CPU fan (though you may need a 4-pin PWM fan). As far as control the system fan headers goes thats up the manufacture if they choose to implement that or not. It's possi...

It's coil whine, as I posted over in your Anandtech post.

It's most likely an interaction between the Seasonic and the video card and/or motherboard.

What exactly are you powering with the Seasonic? If it's a lite load you might have better luck with a lower wattage S12.

The CNPS3100+ comes with an inline resistor you can use to drop the voltage down to 7 or 9v (I forget which). Of even better if you motherboard has fan control you can use that to set the desired min/max speed. Also keep in mind "quiet" is subjective even here. Personally I think the Zalman 92mm fan...
