Re: Quietest fan that blows "straight"
The ones I purchases are the SY1225SL12L slipstream type. One is installed in the rear exhaust position, and one in the front intake position. The rear exhaust works fine. I just wish the front intake had a more direct airflow directly over the GPU. I have not checked the prices of these air straigh...

Re: Quietest fan that blows "straight"
Thanks for the help guys. A duct seems like the most practical solution, but unfortunately there is too much stuff in the way for me to be able to use one. Something like the Nexus beamair seems like an interesting solution, but i'm somewhat skeptical of something only about 0.25" thick having any r...

Re: Replace the cooling fans on my GTX 570
Just wanted to make an update with my progress http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/3748/photo1mr.jpg Here is the video card with the stock fans and shroud removed. Its quite nice and hefty, and it has the added bonus of including the baseplate which helps to cool the RAM and VRM's. http://img607.imag...

Quietest fan that blows "straight"
I've recently made some major modifications to my rig, including replacing the noisy fans on my video card with some quiet ones, and changing the positioning of my fans. One of my goals was to add a 120mm fan at the front of my P183 case to blow across the GPU to help keep it cooler and try to vent ...

Re: Replace the cooling fans on my GTX 570
Thanks Sebrad! How is the sound profile of the two F9's? Mines should be here in a few days. Also, i'm not sure your "jam the fan header on" trick will work as well for me. My video card has 2 fan headers directly next to each other. I'm pretty sure that the F9's plug would be too large to have them...

Re: Replace the cooling fans on my GTX 570
Thanks for the advice mkk. I had completely forgotten about zip ties. I found some and they should do the job nicely. Now that I think of it, the hardest part of this project will be to change the connector on the AC F9 fans to the one used on the default fans, as they are not the standard type moth...

Replace the cooling fans on my GTX 570
I have a Palit GTX 570 Sonic, and although its a great card, the noise is unbearable when playing a game. They sound like two mini vacuum cleaners. http://www.overclockersclub.com/siteimages/articles/palit_gtx_570_sonic_platinum/005_thumb.jpg My first instinct was to replace the entire HSF combo wit...

Re: Seasonic X650 and Antec P183 Airflow?
Honestly, don't worry about it. I have the same exact combination and it works excellent. I have the X650 facing upwards and all is well. I figured since the fan doesn't kick in at all for me when i'm not gaming (under 20% load), what little heat it does generate will simply rise up through the fan ...

Can't say i'm entirely impressed with mine. The performance overall is pretty sluggish. Its just fine for web browsing and movie watching, but I wouldn't try to do more than that. Windows 7 felt too sluggish on it. XP feels much much better, and I highly recommend running XP on it. I could not find ...

Well i've been using the drive for about two weeks now. I guess the drive has slightly broken in a but over time, but that tiny hint of idle whine is now totally gone. Overall, the drive is now quite a good deal quieter than my Barracuda V! In other words, this drive is easily the quietest drive i'v...

WD1600AAJB - Surprisingly Silent!
As I was quickly running out of space on my old 60gb Seagate Barracuda V, I needed to pick up something a bit larger. I use the drive in my G4 Cube which is on 24/7 and in my bedroom, so suffice to say, I needed something as quiet as possible. For those that don't know about the G4 Cube, its totally...

Yeah, I had the exact same problem with my Inspiron 9300. Very annoying high pitched whine. Like others have said, enabling a USB device seems to fix it. What I ended up doing is using bluetooth instead of plugging in a USB device, since its internal and out of the way. I went into device manager, a...

Oddly though, I just did this the other day. I too was looking to install a silent HDD into my cube and everyone says that 2.5" is the way to go. So I purchased a Seagate 60gb and planned to use that. However, installing it was not so easy. I purchased a 2.5 -> 3.5 adapter kit with rails. The rails ...

Samsung M60 2.5" drives... where are they?
I noticed on samsung's website (http://www.samsung.com/Products/HardDiskDrive/) they have the new 60gb per platter laptop drives listed for PATA. However, I am unable to find them for sale anywhere. Typing the model numbers into google reveals nothing. Any clue if these are released yet?

Sorry I dont know mac stuff, I was a PC salesman for 8 years, so I am pretty much conditioned against the Macs. Made me think though, is there enough interest on the site here to keep a Mac section going? The new OS is proving very popular and by many accounts is leading the OS market technically s...

Mine runs about 38c in a silent drive with a low speed fan blowing on to the metal bracket, the whole lot is suspended. 32 without the enclosure.... Not sure what you mean by hot though on yours hot is a bit subjective to make a judgement on. Speedfan takes a couple of minutes to install and will g...

Anyone else have a really HOT Seagate Barracuda V drive?
No, you didn't stumble into the past. I got sick of trying to find a Nidec based Samsung, so I picked up a used 60gb Barracuda V for $20 off of eBay. I am actually very pleased with it so far. There is ZERO whine coming from it, and only a very quiet "shhhh" sound that I can easily live with. The se...

I would personally rather not bother with a laptop drive because I don't want to deal with the issue of fitting it in a standard drive bay, and because they are a bit more than I am looking to spend. I know a Nidec Samsung can be quiet enough for me, but I never seem to be lucky enough to get one :/

Samsung SP0802N / SP0822N differences?
I've been buying Samsung SP0802N (80GB) drives for over a year now and I really like their silence. The other day I noticed on Newegg that they are selling a new nodel - SP0822N, which seems to have the same exact specs as the previous model. I checked Samsung's website and I can find no differences...

Thanks for the reply. The system I will be using the drive in doesn't recognize past 137gb, and I don't want to spend over $60, so I will only be getting the 80gb. Where to find a NIDEC Samsung?
The title says it all. I am looking for the quietest 80-120gb drive available, and AFAIK thats Samsung. I have 2 of them already and am fairly satisfied, but they are both JVC. I've heard that the NIDEC motors have less whine. The trouble is, finding a NIDEC drive. I can't just order through newegg ...

The fan is connected using the 3 pin plug. Trying out other fans would be nice but its a ton of work to cut a fan out of its chassis and then perfectly glue it into the old chassis. I suppose i'll have to put the old fan back in, but i'm not even sure if it'll go back in. I did undervolt the old fan...

In a bit of a pickle - EMI interference from fan?
Well, I finally decided to go through with the procedure that I asked about here: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=16946 . I purchased a nexus 120mm fan since it seemed like the quietest option available. I followed the instructions, cut out the fan from its chassis and replaced it i...

Thanks for the reply guys. The fan is 120mm x 25mm (at least the article says so), which is what the Nexus fan is. Also, I believe the chassis is shaped that way so that it can direct the airflow downwards and out through the vent. Yeah I suppose the grills aren't the greatest, but its better than h...
