Zalman goes bankrupt

Hey guys. Been a few years since I've visited here obsessively. http://hardware.slashdot.org/story/14/11/06/1316226/pc-cooling-specialist-zalman-goes-bankrupt-due-to-fraud Zalman is bankrupt now. :( I used to like a few of their products back in the early days before Noctu and the wise people of SPC...

New shorter PCB Geforce GTX 670 out!

It's been a few years since I've visited.

So there's a new shorter video card that will be a godsend for Mini ITX builders:

It won't be utterly silent but it MAY be quiet.

Hard drive prices are going through the roof.

Consolidation + Thailand flood = $59.99 drives last month are now...$169.99 and rising.

Re: Hey guys! Long time no visit--my silent gaming cube odys

Think the new Corsair SODIMM DDR3 RAM was the cause of my weird random crashing.

Replacing with 2 G.Skill SODIMMs seems to have cleared the problem--knock on wood.

256GB Crucial M4 SSD is definitely better than the OCZ Agility 3...better in that it doesn't BSOD.

...aaand the replacement brand-new-out-of-box OCZ Agility 3 failed 6-7 days after last exactly like the previous. BSODed and disappeared from BIOS.

Re: Hey guys! Long time no visit--my silent gaming cube odys

I'm having a hard time keeping this cool. It idles at 45c and on load goes to 75c with the Noctua fans on full 1300rpm (not loud though) all the time. I don't think that the thermal grease stayed applied properly the hours spent getting the heatsink on properly. I have clean and reapply the grease I...

Re: Hey guys! Long time no visit--my silent gaming cube odys

i disassembled the whole thing to reseat cpu heatsink (kozuti) and took out the 80mm fan while i was at it. it idles at 40c now with the 120mm noctua blowing onto it at 1300rpm and the 1300rpm 120mm noctua sucking air in from case front. definitely not quiet but the fan characteristics aren't unplea...

Re: Hey guys! Long time no visit--my silent gaming cube odys

no overclocking options, chose not to overclock. been too lazy to remove the bottom fan, not removing it because i'd have to maneuver out video card too. i may do that. is there any harm in running both it and the noctua on top blowing down? dunno about video card under load as i never got a chance ...

Hey guys! Long time no visit--my silent gaming cube odyssey!

After 8 years (after first joining SPCR and seeing the Shuttles reviewed on Tech Report/Sudhian) and discovering Vantec Stealth fans were NOT stealthy at all, and then descending into silent OCD (quieter fans let you hear defects with all the other defects and when everything is silent, things start...

Just an update: I'm running 2x40GB (not in RAID, I would lose TRIM) with the 2nd 40GB for my swap file + CS4. I had to put the video card at the bottom initially since the PCIE slot was the 2nd slot. The sound card I bought was PCIE and could only go in that slot. However, I returned that sound card...

Thanks for the constructive criticism. However, I've recovered from 5+ years of SPCR obsession at absolute silence and have learned to live with a degree of faint white noise as long as the sound characteristics aren't jarring to the ear. I have no need to do away with the fan on the side of the CPU...

Using 2 of these in the case and 1 on the CPU fan: http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/acc/026/sy1225sl_detail.html (the 1600rpm version) Pretty awesome. Set the fans to "silent" with Asus Fan Control in the BIOS and the ones that weren't controllable with that I set to 40%. 40-45 C degrees idle, 65-7...

the ramsink is quite high. trust me, no way to get the clip around the bottom with the ram in the way. i managed to replace the ram with mushkin blackline with slightly more modest heatsinks and was able to move the fan over to the right.

Looks like the Scythe Slip-Stream Slim won't work either since the RAM heatsink fins are too tall. I will have to switch to "normal" RAM heatspreaders.
