To stop a fan, start your computer, and let it boot and get stabilized. Then open up the computer and pick a fan. Take a finger and gently press it on the hub of the fan, slowing it down until it is stopped. Take 5 or 10 seconds and listen to the noise without the current fan; then remove your finge...

Hey Pitch, Assuming you're dealing with a fan in the back of the case, used as exhaust, you might try making a muffler for it - take box sized for the perimeter of the fan, and put some sound absorbtion material in it. Make sure to leave room for the air to get thru, but force it to flow through a p...

hey burcakb good idea for a thread. *edited//new question** I tried to undervolt my cpu, dropping it from 1.7 (which actually shows in 8rdavcore as 1.61) to 1.675, then running prime 95. When i run prime 95 it gives me an error after 5 minutes complaining about rounding--has anybody seen this before...

hey reid, Thermalright's directions are definitely not the best; when i installed my si97, i installed it so that pipes are pointed up (towards the powersupply). I think on thermalright's site someplace i saw a bit of documentation that noted that having the pipes out to the side was best, and point...

Thanks for the ideas on the CPU fan, I'll give that a try too, and see if that helps. I ran Prime 95 for 30 mins, and the temp topped out at 55, and it closed out w/ no errors. I also shut down folding at home and as I'm sitting here the temps are already down to 49. So it looks like it was just the...

Just "silenced" my computer, and my CPU temps spik

Hi all, I finally finished my project to quiet my computer. My problem is that I'm seeing a spike in my CPU temps which doesn't look right to me--before the switch they hovered at around 43* C; now they're sitting up around 50-52* C (according to speedfan). A summary of the changes I made is below; ...

Good article--My next computer will be a HTPC, so the info here will be useful. I also can comment some on the foam-type issues. Back before I was reading this site, I tried some of that Akasa PaxMate stuff on an aluminum case I had that was running 3 80 mm fans, plus a TT CPU cooler and power suppl...

Or if you're like me and realize you never use the floppy drive any more, you can just skip installing it entirely--that's what my plan is when I finish my mods and put my computer together in its new case--no reason to bother putting it in if you don't use it.

If elastic cord is too flexible, but you have no other choises at hand, then you can try doubling of tripling the cord, so the drive hangs on more strands. Actually that's what I'm doing--I've got some what looks to be fairly generic elastic banding, that looks strong, but I'm doubling it up throug...

D'OH!!! well that's not helpful--03 is when I bought the 80, so I guess that would make sense. But shouldn't I still get some info off the 120? I just bought that a couple months ago off newegg, so I'm reasonably sure it would have the monitoring on it.... Perhaps the better question would be: Is th...

well this is vexing.... :x I did indeed find I had to enable the SMART monitoring on my mobo--which I did (it was under the advanced options--had to press ctrl+f1 to see them), then i eagerly tried dtemp again....only to find that I get the same errors--from WD's website they appear to have the capa...

dtemp problem?

Hey all, I've looked around and didn't see any info on this so I thought I'd ask--I recently started on the silencing hobby, and downloaded dtemp to keep track of my HDD temps. My problem is that dtemp says "Error reading device id info". :-( Has anyone else seen this? Do I need to turn the SMART mo...

I'm thinking of getting the 3000b too--and I like this idea, but how do you know if your hard drives are cool enough to survive on their own? And a better question, assuming you can get a measureable temp, how hot is too hot for a HDD? I currently run a couple of WD 80 GB (no raid). And the other th...

Re: it is small -- but there is no sense fighting it! :-)

Hello: The force of the rising warm air is small -- but there is no sense fighting it! :-) If you work with it, then you get a cooler case with less effort. And the difference between working with it -- and working against it is not negligible. I would tend to agree w/ Neil...It would seem to me th...

Has anybody had a chance to order/try this with any of the 6800 cards yet?? I've submitted a query to TT's tech support section asking for more detailed specs on the card, including if it's rated to cool a 6800GT, and how it fits w/ mobos. I'll update when/if I get anything back from them.

Upgrading CPU, MB, VGA coolers possibly case, advice??

Hi all; Thanks to Mike C. for the great site!! I'm a newbie and built my first computer for myself ~15 months ago. And was greatly pleased when I turned it on and found I had created a jet engine. That pleasure, of course, wore off quickly and I'm now getting around to looking at quieting it...
