I have a WD15EARS drive. It's also has this head park and increasing cycle count problem after several days of usage. Should I use WDidle3 to increase the park head wait time at this drive? http://lh6.ggpht.com/_l16gcJ3-6eQ/S47GXKrz2zI/AAAAAAAAAmY/NnkCeSe4z3k/Load-Unload%20cycle%20count%20%281%29.jpg

Re: Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 2 TB?

I noticed one shop is selling Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 2 TB for quite reasonable price (~30 € less than the WD GP or Seagate LP in 2 TB size). I tried searching for more information on the Internet but found quite little information. So, has anyone yet any experience with these hard drives? Here i...

Ticking fan is just much more audible than low broadband noise. I'm looking for a quiet PSU which will not s...

Back to the drives... From a recent posting of yours it seems that I should stay away from Seagate drives because of reliability issues. "Hitachi has played too honestly. WD basically lied about rpm, causing lots of confusion, and openly admitted constant operation at fixed rpm after majority of retailers already listed the drive in their catalogues as 7200rpm. At least 90% of Finnish retailers sell it as such. Also, the difficulty ...

Anyway, I still consider WD's decision even bolder than Hitachi's very successful engineering to reduce power consumption. Hitachi's solution didn't solve noise issues. Some steady improvement, but not a total revolution. Reviving 5400rpm was radical. Before GreenPower the last big 5400-revver was ...

What I wonder is how many platters this drive has. I'm guessing it has to be 4 or 5 platters. Seagate currently holds platter density record at 375GB per platter. I can certainly see WD upping that limit to 400GB per platter, which could make it a 5 platter drive. There is a possibility that WD upp...

GreenPower's power consumption in that review is quite high. Maybe it is with head loaded? Well, it's actually a fair comparison this way, as 7K1000.B has it's heads loaded and spinning at 7200rpm. Pretty darn impressive economy of that Hitachi. It practically matches 5400rpm competition (though it...

After several hours of usage, the Load / Unload Cycle Counter just increased by two (there was two switch on/off), which is absolutely normal for an APM disabled HDD.

This WDIdle3 program really works, and can switch off APM on WD Green Power. :)
