Re: Solo II vs R5 (specific questions)

Thanks for the reply and tip about Super Flower. Unfortunately I can't wait for the lower wattage models. I have however looked into the EVGA 650 G2 but it has been priced the same or more than the 750 recently in the retail channels available to Canadians. As for the Kotetsu reviews, I can't tell y...

Solo II vs R5 (specific questions)

I am putting together a quiet gaming build that will likely include i5-4690K, Asus Maximus VII Hero, EVGA 750W G2, MSI GTX 970,... <tbd>. My plan is to use this conservatively for a couple years, then overclock and add another GTX 970 (or upgrade the graphics card) to squeeze another couple years ou...

Anecdotal evidence only, but my suspended Raptor died a month ago after about 12 months of use.

If you do, be sure to post your before and after temps. :D Yes, I would like to. I'm still waiting for delivery and will break in the card a bit to be sure it's not defective before voiding my warranty. :? In the meantime, I just discovered this report of a fan-replaced VF900 on an overclocked 4850...

Silencing A/C to Silence PC (images posted)

I hope I don't push forum topic boundaries too far with this question. I am trying to quiet an Air Conditioner to help lower ambient temps of my computer in a hot location (among other reasons). Window A/C's have become *intolerably* loud in the last few years. I found the lowest noise machin...

If you buy DL I would suggest only buying Verbatim, which I get for $2.15 each in spindle of 10 in Toronto. You can also order online for a similar price from Blankmedia.ca.

Excellent comparison, DonQ. Thanks!

It sounds like idle whine and vibrational noise should not be problems with a suspended HD501LJ.

I am less bothered by seek noise and currently tolerate a Raptor, so I'm guessing that won't be a problem either.

My HD321KJ is great. See my reply in this thread . Are others finding the T166 series, when suspended, to be fine for idle hum and vibration noise? I'm much more sensitive to noise on the low end. I'm considering the 500gb model (in an Antec Solo) though so acoustics could be quiet different than t...

Two reasons (for me at least) to go for the P5W instead of the P5B: 1) Four PATA interfaces (instead of two) 2) 975 chipset (instead of 965) The P5W also has two PCI slots together on the side, instead of between the PCI-E 16 slots as on the P5B. These are precisely some of the reasons I went with ...

Scythe Mine fan swap to Nexus raised temps?!

SPCR's review of the Scythe Mine showed lower temps after swapping the stock fan for a Nexus 120mm, so I am guessing I mucked up my own swap. Has anyone else done this that can report their results? I did go about it all wrong: in initial testing I was happy enough with stock Mine noise levels and t...

I have an eVGA 7900GT with VF-900 connected to a P5WDH motherboard fan header. Speedfan controls the fan speed just fine in this case, although I found that on the lowest fanmate setting the VF-900 keeps the GPU cool under load (low 40s C) and at extremely low noise levels. Speedfan control of video...

The conclusion is that with this BIOS, the 965P-based P5B is now almost as good as the 975X-based P5W DH. Anandtech's conclusion, true, but elsewhere opinions differ. At xtreme forums, it seems that others are having far more luck overclocking the retail e6400 and e6600 chips on the P5B to 3600-400...

It doesn't seem to be an issue for you, but if you don't have a good audio card, the one on P5W (Realtek ALC882M) seems much better than the one on P5B (ADI Soundmax). I have this ADI solution on M2N-SLI and it's crap, at least with the current drivers. Some MP3s are great, some are rather distorsi...

Speedfan on P5B?

I am upgrading my system and trying to decide on a motherboard to go with an e6400 or e6600, primarily between the Asus P5WDH and P5B Deluxe. Software fan control is one important factor. Speedfan seems to controls the P5W very well. But, according to what I read, on the P5B Speedfan does not curren...

My eVGA 7900GT stock speed has been a bit unstable but that's becourse of the drivers, haven't seen any BOSD that I can relate to any hardware. 7900GT is a really good card. Very cheap consider it's performance. When you say unstable at 'stock' speed, do you mean eVGA's stock overclocked speed or n...

Unfortunately it probably does not matter which brand of 7900GT you buy since they are all (except the Gainward 512MB version) manufactured by Flextronics in China, according to what I have heard. In theory they are all equally susceptible to the instability reported in the various online forums. Th...
