For storage, wired networking is definitely the better option because wireless is still so terribly slow for large files. But, I feel that wireless will get there soon enough and it won't be a worry any more. This product would be a simple replacement for a small home server used for backup or a cen...

I have been having a similar problem, although with an ASUS NForce2 and AMD. My problem is that the BIOS temperature reads a different value than the ASUS tool in WinXP. The ASUS tool is significantly cooler, peaking at 42 when under 100% load for an extended period of time. The BIOS will turn the c...

Asus Nforce2 BIOS and Asus Probe Temps Don't Match
Hi, I'm having a problem when running my Athlon XP full speed on an Asus Nforce2 board. Example: Compressing a large amount of pre-ripped audio files. The CPU is at 100% for an extended period of time (2 hours predicted). I also have Asus Probe running and it shows the CPU temps creeping up from 37 ...

SOUND CARD: Terratec DMX 6fire 24/96 LT. This is one of the more important components to me. This card appears to have very good performance. I am concerned about the fact that it is internal, and performs the Digital-Analog Conversion inside the PC, and I am concerned that this may compromise soun...

Seriously, though, the whole point of distributed computing projects like folding or seti@home are that they use up extra CPU power. Building a farm defeats the purpose. But, it does sound like an interesting hobby. Did you ever think about how your dorm mates feel about having so many computers on ...

Frodo: how are you able to connect all of our IDE devices with the HDD's on foam feet on the bottom of the case? I'm actually running an ABIT KT7-RAID motherboard, this gives me two more IDE headers/channels. Hope this all makes sense, if not let me know. I'm going to try to borrow a buddy's digita...

I actually have two IBM 60GXP 60GB drives that are running in a RAID-0 array. While they are not the quietiest drive around, I was able to make them much more silent by simply decoupling them. They are now sitting at the bottom of my case on some foam "feet" that I cut out of some packing material....

About the Dr. Z, It's an L.A. company, I think, so I'm not sure whether you would be able to demo on in LA. However, they are quite spectacular if it's the sound you are looking for. They are also fairly versatile, but if you are going for ultra high gain look elsewhere! My friend in CA said that Dr...

I've been using Nero Drivespeed. The sick thing is that I never realized I had it on my computer because I rearrange my start menu so that I can get at the software I use more quickly. It's brilliant! Works like a charm. I've throttled my drives to 4x for my Plextor burner and 5x for my Toshiba DVD ...

munceyboyjoe, please tell us what you mean by music recording. Do you mean: 1. Multitrack recording your band with an 8 track interface 2. Multitrack recording your band one stereo pair at a time with a 2 track interface 3. Multitrack recording yourself with a 2 track interface 4. Programming MIDI w...

CD / DVD ROM Speed Throttling Software?
I'm sure this information must be in the archives, but I can't find it there. I'm looking for a piece of software to keep my CD drive from spinning so fast. I'd like to keep it around 2x-4x speed when I'm doing certain things -- like watching videos on CD. The drive is so loud it drives me mad! Any ...

Silence your DAW
Hi and Welcome, I, too, use my PC for recording audio. Moving your PC into its own room is the most effective way to silence your computer, but what you are suggesting is to build an enclosure for your PC. This would dampen the sound of your computer at the cost of increasing its temperature and the...

Silence the video card
For the CPU, get a nice heatsink from the recommended section and put a Panaflo 80mm fan on top of it and it will be very quiet. I use an Alpha heatsink which I have had for quite a while. For the video card, many people are using the Zalman GPU chipset heatsinks. Some people run them fanless, but I...

Hi guys, here's my current specs: 1 241040A PlexWriter CD-Burner 1 Lite-On 165H (16X DVD drive) Doesn't answer your question but: I have heard that the Lite-On drives are not the quietest drives on the market. I have a Toshiba DVD drive which is very quiet when playing DVD's, although not so quiet ...

I would not recommend going to the effort for the reasons posted above, and because the rubber grommets you say you might place between the fan and the power supply (on the inside) will reduce vibrations enough that any more foam between the PSU and the case would be un-useful. Think of the law of d...
