Yay! Finally a decent sized hard drive with low noise! :)

As good as my Samsung 1614C's are, 160gb is getting a little small - and when you have 6 of them the vibration is a big issue. So even though vibration is similar with the WD it should be a lot less of a problem with only 1 or 2 of them.

I'm a bit dissapointed with the 1 folder-restriction. Huge discs are expensive, and may be to small, and RAIDing is a security-risk. AtW RAID 0 maybe, but RAID 5 is a good choice for putting multiple drives together (as long as you don't mind the poor write performance). Lose any drive and your dat...

As an aside, does anyone know if having the SATA drives plugged into the same "channel" (SATA3/4 on my mobo), will cause a bottleneck? I know that with IDE if you have two devices on one IDE channel the devices won't run at optimal speed. SATA drives all run on separate channels, so there is no pro...

I'm currently waiting for a drive back from Seagate. According to their site, it's being shipped currently. (I sent it off on Monday). I originally tried returning it through the retailer I bought it off, but he reckoned he'd sent it back to the distributor and they'd found it not faulty. Then he sp...

Re: Cage to mount 4 hds in 3 5 1/2" bays

Ive checked my raid controller card and it fully supports all those actions rebuilding the array fine. Have you looked into that? Would work out cheaper and more efficient in the long run unless you need the full ~450gb storage up front. No I haven't looked into it, although I would find it hard to...

Re: Cage to mount 4 hds in 3 5 1/2" bays

getting a raid array setup soon which will involve 4 samsung 160gb sata hds in a raid 5 array Pretty much exactly what I'm looking at doing sometime this year. Just waiting for the price of the drive to drop closer to $200 (AU$). Total cost of raid array: 5x160gb 1614C's + 3ware 8506-8 ~ $2000. :o ...

Yes, 80GB Cuda IV's are double-platter drives. But they're still very quiet - I wouldn't let that fact stop you getting them.

I did a similar thing with my old Geforce DDR - ripped off the fan (way too noisy) and chucked on the NB32J. I still needed a fan though, as without it the heatsink quickly got too hot too touch! So I rigged up my old northbridge fan @ 7V and now its happy

I just put one of those onto my Epox 8k9a2+. *shrug* I guess you've just gotta make the decision hehe.

I used some Arctic Alumina thermal adhesive instead of the stuff which comes with the Zalman. Should improve the heat transfer (for $22 it better! :p)

Stop me here for a second, but I am YET to see a northbridge that needs anything more than a really basic heatsink. Under full load for hours mine never got too hot to touch so a simple light heatsink should be all that is required. My Epox 8k9a2+ northbridge comes with a heatsink + fan, and I've j...

Just a sidenote to testing stability with prime95... In some cases you might find that your machine will run 12+ hours of prime95 fine, but then crash in other applications. Or, prime95 might crash within 10 minutes, but then your other applications can run faultlessly. So even though prime95 can gi...

The Epox 8k9a2+ is undervoltable.

Does 1.400 - 1.850 in 0.025v increments
and 1.850 - 2.100 in 0.050v increments

(Currently running my xp2400+ at 1.55v on this board).

Piezoelectric fans

Came across an interesting article at New Scientist. http://www.newscientist.com/hottopics/tech/article.jsp?id=99991701&sub=Nanotechnology A quote from the article: When Garimella put a piezoelectric fan inside a laptop computer with a rotational fan, it brought the temperature down by 8°C. The piez...

Rheobus/Hardcano/etc ?

I'm thinking of purchasing a gizmo like one of these, and was wondering what experiences people have had with them? Do they work well with no problems? How many fans can you run off them? How slow/quiet do they allow you to go?

Thanks.

After some further reading, I can answer one of my own questions. :)

A PCI IDE controller will allow any board to support over 137gb drives.

Also, I'm not 100% sure on this one, but a board supporting ATA133 will support drives >137gb.

I'm actually surprised that it bothers anyone more than the seeking sound of it, but if they say so, I don't have any experience with them. Yeah this surprises me too. Without hearing it myself, I'd assume that the sound couldn't be worse than an intense seeking process, and if this is so, is norma...

Saw an article on headphones which do noise-cancelling, they were primarily targetted towards ppl who do a lot of flying, to drop the noise of the engines. Aparently they are smart enough to only drop background noise, and say for example the person next to you is speaking to you, you could hear the...
