Damn. I was hoping that some 5400 RPM drives can be made to spins lower via AAM or some kind of firmware update. I've been out of the SPCR loop for a while.

Lowest RPM large hard drive

I want the largest capacity hard drive that spins at the slowest speed. I'm aware that there are 5400 RPM TB drives (I own two), but I want one even slower. These would be for DVR or WHS use. Basically they'd sit idle/unused most of the time. Since Tivos don't spin down their hard drives, the only t...

On a side note, I wouldn't cram HDDs into a HTPC. It's an appliance- you want to set it up and forget about it. If it dies, you'd want to be able to quickly and easily replace and redeploy it for tivo/whatever duty. Think of the hard drive capacity in your HTPC as a media cache. Your most recently v...

Your choice of CPU and GPU will probably give you trouble with full 1080p playback. Testing by AT ( http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2886 ) shows that pairing today's bleeding edge CPU/GPU together gets by alright, but when you start moving into "midrange" gear, it's questionable. Your ...

The only problem with that is that I have no need for that much computing power. This server is for home use. Hmm... I might consider a rig like that. I think undervolting is necessary in some form for my application. In a machine that's on 24/7, the undervolting might make a significant difference. I can't be sure though, since I anticipate that there will be a minimum of 4 HDDs in the machine...

The only problem with that is that my network and HDD traffic can potentially saturate the PCI bus. I am planning this build to last me between 5-10 years, so I'm ...

Low power server

I want to build a server that will handle: email, light sql, light web hosting, file/ printer sharing, and active directory/roaming profiles. It will be used in my home, and will be on 24/7. I anticipate starting it off with 3+ HDD's in RAID5 for storage + 1HDD for the OS. It needs to have GbE (not ...

I think it would be good to also include a field for the form factor of the motherboard. Some cases (well, mine in particular) might only accept mATX boards.

PNY GeForce 6600GT 128MB (AGP)

Has anyone modded this card for quiet usage? It's got 2xDVI, 1xcomponent, 1xS-vid, and 1xcomposite outputs. It also includes 2xDVI>VGA dongles, so it's a very versatile card IMO. (HTPC usage comes to mind...) Anyway, I just got mine in the mail today and after installing it, I've determined that it ...

Intel vs AMD is a moot point, IMO, if you like a slim look and care about looks. The slim cases restrict airflow too much to be accomodating to Intel chips. Venice cores also support SSE3, which help narrow the gap in video processing. But I personally don't feel that the extra video encoding offere...

IIRC, the SP1604N is a 2MB cache model, whereas the 1614N and 1614C are 8MB cache models. N and C denote PATA and SATA, respectively. All three drives should spin at 7200RPMs. Samsung should be transitioning all of its drives to a uniform drive motor though. If this is accurate (my memory may be a b...

Seasonic just earned itself a new loyal customer

I bought the Seasonic Super Tornado 300W unit shortly after both its release and its raving review here at SPCR. About six months into its use, I began to get the non-starting fan whine. I learned that I could remedy the problem and start the fan by jamming my exhaust fans and running Prime 95 for a...

Icepack goop instead of water?

With the recent thread about using icepacks to safely and effectively sandwich HDDs, I'm wondering if it's feasible to use the icepack goop/liquid in a pump-free watercooling setup. My guess is that the icepack liquid is more effective at absorbing and distributing heat than water, and in a relative...

As much as I hate to say this, I don't think the Pentium M motherboards will reach US consumers at any appreciable rate. I'd avoid it if I were you. 120mm fans generally pull a good amount of power. A good rule of thumb for fan headers is to power anything >=80mm separately. The only real risk, AFAIK, is that you would burn out the power header on the motherboard. It's not really that big a deal, but you'd end up powe...

If designing a ...
