Alum vs. Steel - which cools better TESTED

Folks around here have been saying for some time, with regard to case materials, that "aluminum cools better than steel" is a myth . Finally, someone did a side by side comparison (at Systemcooling.com) using two Chieftec Dragon cases - one aluminum and one steel. Here's the linkage: Aluminum vs. St...

Re: Panaflo fans aren't made like they used to be?

For some reason my new 12Ls don't seem as quiet as an old L1a. Is sounds more like 28dB then 21dB. Not to mention that they have an audible click. :( And yes, they are 12Ls. -Por Did you get them from SVC? If so, I'm not sure where SVC is getting their marketing info to call them new 12L's. A week ...

Recommend making the date format international-friendly. Not everyone uses MM-DD-YY. Justin_R, would you be just as happy with only month and year? A 3-character month abbreviation? ie. Oct '04 or Mar 2004? Or does adding the day of the month help as well?

I think Its quite wasteful to use any acoustic damping UNLESS you hear significant vibration, then your only EFFECTIVE choice is the AcoustiPack. This is not true. 1. There are other effective choices besides AcoustiPack. 2. There are 3 purposes for sound damping materials - vibration damping, soun...

Hmmm...let me rephrase that question. Would a case made of ten pounds of aluminum make more noise than a similar case made of ten pounds of steel? If so, why? That seems like a rather theoretical question unless you are building a DIY case. One of the reasons that aluminum cases are more resonant i...

Becuase there are occasional concerns voiced about what the 7V mod does to the PSU, you might want to consider running them at 5V, directly from your PSU connector, and see if that provides sufficient cooling. I know you said no controller, etc, but you could also invest in 2 Zalman fanmates , find ...

IMO, don't hard mount the drives to the case or the cage--you will have all sorts of resonance/noise issues if you do. Your first idea sounds like a great idea. No matter what you do, 8 Hitachi drives are going to make some noise, but suspending will cut that. My recommendation is to make sure you h...

How about just dividing the case into 2 compartments, right at the rail line? Put a plate of metal or foam across the tops of rails, and open up the top CD bay or two. Re: Material to thermally insulate PSU duct?

A couple of thoughts you will want to consider. 1) Pulling the power supply out of the box ala Mike C. may be useful as a proof of concept to simulate a perfectly insulated, low impedance duct. If the power supply runs significantly quieter or cooler out of the box, then completing the mod will lik...

In light of Lilla's sticky Building a PSU intake duct/vent , MikeC's sticky Does "Evacuate the heat" role for the PSU work? , & MikeC's system MikeC's external PSU PC , it seems with otherwise proper (or compensating) case airflow, that a PSU duct or PSU isolation (such as outside the case) is a goo...

A bottom vent would be absolutetly horrible if the case had small or no feet, and you put it on a shag carpet.
