Usually I do not give advices, it is your life, you do with it whatever you want. But I came across this particular question many times myself, had some tough time, and, finally, here is the advice: Don't drop anything. If you decided to do it, finish it. Never ignore education. Never drop education...

Playing off that, I don't think 1.8" hard drives are meant to run hard in a computer environment, and I'm thinking the current ones would be too slow to be of any use. The 1.8" drive I mentioned I have in my laptop is fairly fast. It does not seem to work any slower than other laptops and it is per...

I have a portable with a Toshiba 1.8" 40GB drive. It is louder than the WD 2.5" 40 GB drive in another laptop. The third disk, Samsung 2.5" 40GB, is quietest of them all. There is no point in having simply a 1.8" drive, it must be a quiet one.

I do not know about AMD 64 but the Athlon XP-M has a certain limit in voltage at which it will start up. Mine starts hot at around 1.2 volts and cold at 1.3 volts. Once it is started, I can bring the voltage down to 1.1 volts and it works perfectly fine. So you may have the same situation. You have ...

The Scorpio clicking is a fairly common problem. There's Dell firmware that resolves the issue, do a search on the forums and you should come up with some information on it. Well, I want to wait for a while and see if it goes away all by itself. If it does not stop I will try to update the firmware...

Barracuda V SATA version has the acoustic management off. The seeks are really very loud. The spinning noise is rather low though. However, if you want a quiet computer, I advise you to stay away from SATA Barracudas.

[EDIT] And, if you can get Barracuda IV, get it. Those were real good.

Re: RAID1 Q's

As a result of a HDD failure I am going to buy a RAID1 S-ATA PCI card. I know that RAID1 basically mirrors 1 drive using 2 drives, and if one fails, the other is used. How good is this in practice though? It is as good as it says. If only one HDD fails, your data is perfectly safe. Of course, if bo...

I use the second ones (without a heatsink). The temperature of the drive rises significantly but so far works *shrug*. The things that have those tiny grommets sort of thing (like in the first heatsink picture) work noticeably worse.

Idle temps are meaningless, don't get concerned with those at all. Only 100% load temps matter. And even then, unless you experience stability problems, they do not matter.

Suspension may actually help here. Most of the resonance occurs not in the air but on the case. The vibrations are transferred to t...
