Don't act like you weren't warned. T133 review said: "Our usual recommendation to soft-mount any desktop drive goes double for the Spinpoint T: I must have read the wrong review or misunderstood something along the way, because it seemed like every review and person I asked recommended that drive. ...

The problem with most of those "hard drive vibration reduction kits" is that they're mostly made for 5.25" drive bays in a PC case, not for external enclosures.

Would you mind taking a couple of photos of the way your drive is mounted? That would help me see what I should be looking for.

Vibration reducing screws

Having bought a "silent" drive ( Samsung HD-400LD ) which is nowhere near being silent because of its powerful vibrations I'm looking into methods of reducing this. The drive is mounted in a OWC Mercury elite Pro al (Firewire 400/800, USB 2.0) fanless metal enclosure: http://img220.imageshack.us/img...

Samsung disappointment/new drive choice?

I've come to the point where I need a second external hard drive for my Apple Mac Powerbook G4. I already have two OWC Mercury elite Pro al (Firewire 400/800, USB 2.0) fanless metal enclosures, one which already has a Samsung HD-400LD (400 GB ATA) drive mounted. which I bought last year. http://img2...

WD5000AAKS would be excellent candidate. That's a SATA drive, and my external enclosure can only take IDE drives. However, I've been wondering about the Western Digital WDG1C5000 500GB "my book" external drive. I already have a much nicer enclosure (in my opionion), and since I can't find anyone se...

Re: Enclosures are hard to silence

Perhaps you could reconsider your need to use an enclosure? Soft mounting in a case is pretty easy, and much quieter. I'm using a laptop, so that's not an option. However, if I can find some sort of mounting screws with non-vibration conducting rubber in between I could lessen the vibration. So far...

Samsung disappointment -what drive next?

About 6 months ago I ended up buying a Samsung HD400LD which seemed to be the best option available for me, wanting a silent and high performance drive. But I was disappointed :( The drive on its own isn't that noisy (but I certainly wouldn't call it "silent"!), but the vibration which it generates ...

Well, I finally ended up buying a Samsung 400 GB IDE drive (HD400LD), installed it in the fanless aluminium enclosure with Firewire 400/800 and USB 2.0 interfaces built in. I've used it for a week or so, so what can I say?..... Well, it is indeed a lot quieter than other drives I've had in the past,...

Hello, The current SPCR recommendations for large capacity HD's are the Western Digital SE16 -- see the review! Is this the review you're thinking about? Then I looked at the review of the Samsung Spinpoint drives for comparison. I don't understand all the techno-babble, but it seems to me that bot...

The HD400LD is IDE within the enclosure, but connected to the computer via Firewire. Yup, I know about the external interfacing (actually it has Firewire 400, 800 and USB 2.0, so it's pretty flexible). I'm more confused about the internal interfacing. From what I've been told I can only use a stand...

Regarding my question about specs, I found a web-page which says something about what kind of hard-drive specs which are needed for Apple's Final cut pro (digital video editing software). For a Firewire drive (I intend to connect it via FireWire 800), and the page says: If you choose to use a FireWi...

From what I understand, the (relatively) high vibration level means that decoupling is more important if you're going for near-silence. Too bad about the vibration :( Are there quieter drives to consider? What do you mean by "decoupling"? As long as you don't do HD-video editing, any modern drive s...

Samsung 400 GB: good choice for AV use with a Mac laptop?

I'm considering getting a Samsung HD400LD , but having read through a lot of stuff here and there I'm not entirely sure if this is the one to get or not. A lot of it has to do with not understanding all the tech talk :? What I'm looking for is first of all a very quiet drive. I've read that although...

The Samsung HD300LJ drives you have are the same as the HD300LD only with a SATA interface as opposed to IDE, right? (as far as I know I need to use regular IDE drives as my enclosure doesn't handle SATA). Looking up the technical specs for each drive at the Samsung website both drives share the sam...

I'm also looking for a suitable drive in this size range (although I'm not entirely sure how big it should be truth be told). It should be a 3.5" drive with an IDE interface. I'll be using it for editing home-videos and recording/editing music (multitrack recording) with a Mac Powerbook G4. Naturall...

Well, it's been a while since I first posted my question here, waiting for the Samsung 400 GB drive to arrive, but still having to wait as no store nearby seems to have them :? By the way....
Where can I keep up with which drive is currently the quietest one as well as reviews/tests?

I've had a look around the Silent PC review website, but all I can find are old reviews and general information about how the tests have been done etc.

Thanks for those comments :D I've had a look at Samsung's website and indeed, there's a 400 GB IDE model available called the HD400LD . So even though it's shown at the website it doesn't necessarily mean it's available to the public? Any idea when these drives will be made available? I really don't...

Silent hard drive for Mac audio/video use (Seagate?)

I've recently bought a 15" Apple Macintosh Powerbook G4 laptop which I intend to use (among many things) for video editing and multi-track music recording. For that I've been recommended to get an external hard drive connected to the machine using the Firewire 800 connector for the highest possible ...

Choice of external hard drive/enclosure for Mac Powerbook

I'm just about to buy one of the newly released 15" 1.67GHz Macintosh G4 Powerbooks and will also need an external hard drive as I'll be using it for video editing/music recording. I don't know too much about these things, but I believe I should choose a drive with a Firewire connection (the Powerbo...
